Launched yesterday at the Technology, Entertainment and Design conference in Long Beach, Singularity University is going to be an institution with a difference. Its chancellor will be futurist Ray Kurzweil, whose 2005 book gave the place its name.
It will be housed at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, and Google has donated $1 million to help fund it, while other big companies have also given money. But the tuition for the nine-week course will be a very hefty $25,000.
But Apple needn’t fear for its iPod just yet: T-Mobile’s new ‘Ear Phone’ handsets can hold just three songs at once. And each song is limited to a 90-120s clip – as much for GPRS-based download duration reasons as handset storage capacity – and they’re not cheap: £1.50 or
The pad was of course succeeded some six months later by the much better, lighter and hand-fitting Controller S, and this will of course replace the original pad in system packages and presumablybundles.
However much we like beating them up about the original pad (flame away), this is a welcome move, eliminating the final few quid we’d spend on top of the price of the console. Now it’s just £129.99 – no memory card, no replacement pad – and then games, making Xbox the most cost effective console choice, even if you do want DVD functionality.
