Cowon S9 Review

Summary

Most Apple aficionados would be hard-pressed to say that any player out there can really challenge the elegantly simplistic iPod Touch in the style department, but if there’s one that’s up to the challenge, it might be Cowon’s upcoming Curve S9. From the glinting chrome trim on its sides and the gentle arc of its rear panel, to the expansive 3.3-inch OLED screen on its face that melds seamlessly into the rest of its body, it’s clear that Cowon spent some serious time tweaking this thing for style, and we think it may be ready to topple the Cupertino giant.

Camcorder Buying Guide

Sony Flash CamcorderWhether you’re interested in recording seasonal holidays, birthdays or vacations, it’s a perfect time to invest in a camcorder to capture those once-in-a-lifetime get-togethers with family and friends.

Sure, a digital camera can do the trick to immortalize precious moments, but why settle for a still and lifeless image when you can shoot video and record audio for future generations to enjoy, be it of young children ripping open presents, a birthday toast at the dinner table given by grandma and grandpa or a baby’s first steps on a beach?

Cowon Shows off Three Stylish Touch PMPs

Cowon Shows off Three Stylish Touch PMPs

With the gargantuan IFA 2008 show just around the corner, Cowon today started building momentum for its own upcoming offerings by dropping select details about three upcoming players. The Cowon S9, O2 and L3 all carry generous touch-screens and a variety of multimedia capabilities.

The S9 Curve lives up to its name with a slim body that’s square from a top-down view, but has a pronounced curve on the back of its chrome-edged case. The biggest attraction besides its unusual styling will be its 3.3-inch OLED touch screen, the first to combine capacitive touch and OLED technology in a PMP. It also sports a 500MHz dual-core CPU, Bluetooth, FM radio, dictionary, flash user interface, TV output, and orientation sensor to change the display when rotated.

Americans grouchy about the limited U.S. selection of MP3 players can lighten up and scratch one more player off the rather long list of Asia-only releases. Cowon America recently announced that the iAudio U5 flash-based player has hit the U.S.

Originally announced at the IFA trade show in August, the U5 comes in both 4GB and 8GB variants, with a 1.8-inch LCD and size similar to the Zune with the same storage capacity. The U5 uses Cowon’s JetEffect equalizer, which allows users to choose among six preset settings, or tweak their own, as well as play with additional settings like Mach3Bass, 3D Surround, and panning. Other notable extras include an alarm clock, scheduled recording, and sleep timer. The 3.7V battery is expected to last for 24 hours of audio playback. Unlike both the Zune and iPod Nano, the U5 does not play video.
