Cyber Defense Hub Opens In Estonia

Last year Estonia suffered weeks of debilitating cyber attacks after it took down an old statue of a Russian Red Army soldier in its capital, Tallinn. The denial of service attacks that followed crashed computers in many government departments. Estonia blamed Russia, but Moscow has always denied any involvement.

12 months on from that event, a cyber defense hub has now opened in Estonia. It will be funded and staffed by seven Nato nations – Germany, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania, Italy and Spain. By the time it becomes fully operational at the end of August, the hub will have about 30 workers, who will research and train on cyber defense issues. Even the US is sending an observer.

Americans Lack Knowledge On Cyber Security

Americans Lack Knowledge On Cyber SecurityA worrying new study by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) has foundthat Americans are disturbingly ignorant when it comes to cyber security. Almost half (48%) don’t know how to protect themselves from cyber crime, while 46% don’t know what to do if theybecome cyber crime victims.   Perhaps the most staggering figure is that, although the term has been bandied round a great deal in recent months, 71% have never heard of a botnet, and 59% feelit’s not like that the security of their computer could affect national security.   Ron Teixiera, executive director of the NCSA, said,   “It is important for consumers tounderstand that safe cyber security practices not only protect them from identity theft, but also prevent cyber crime and attacks. By taking simple steps, consumers can protect themselves from cybercrimes and join our effort to protect other internet users." He found the ignorance about botnets especially disturbing.   “Botnets continue to be an increasing threat to consumersand homeland security. Consumers’ unsecured computers play a major role in helping cyber criminals conduct cyber crimes not only on the victim’s computer, but also against others connected to theinternet."   On the plus side, 49% of respondents had changed their passwords in the last year, 19% of them in the last month.

NATO Sees Cyber Warfare Threat

NATO Sees Cyber Warfare ThreatIf you don’t think cyber warfare could be a major problem in the future, then NATO would like to change your mind. At a conference in London last week,Suleyman Anil, the man charged with guarding NATO from cyber attacks, told the Guardian, "Cyber defense is now mentioned at the highest level along withmissile defence and energy security. We have seen more of these attacks and we don’t think this problem will disappear soon. Unless globally supported measures are taken, it can become a globalproblem." Anil told the E-Crime congress that it was costing less for hackers to mount attacks, while the amount of damage they could inflict wasincreasing. The biggest trend of recent years is cyber terrorism, as shown by the attacks on Estonian government sites last year. But there have been many attacks, including those on government sitesin Australian and Britain and on the Pentagon. American officials believe they’re the work of a Chinese-sponsored group which they’ve dubbed Titan Rain. Of course, identifying the shadowypeople behind the attacks is almost impossible. But people in power do understand how real the threat is – the US government has allocated $6 billion to strengthen systems against attack.

Xbox 360 Elite: Thinking Inside the Box

The advantage to being first to market is you have the market to yourself for awhile; the disadvantage is your product looks old first and people stop buying it. Xbox 360 sales have been slowing though they still seemed to be outselling the PS3 which is rumored to be getting a price cut shortly to boost sales.

Getting Shoppers Ready for Cyber Monday

While one of the biggest brick and mortar retail shopping days of the year is Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving), what is coming to be known as one of the biggest virtual shopping days of the year happens the following Monday.

Called Cyber Monday by Shop.org, an association for retailers online, 77 percent of online retailers said that their sales increased substantially last year on the Monday after Thanksgiving. This is according to the Shop.org/BizRate Research 2005 eHoliday Mood Study. Shop.org said experts believe that an increase in web traffic could stem from the fact that consumers may have faster or more secure Internet connections at work and choose to shop there, or that they were unable to finish all of their shopping over the Thanksgiving weekend.
