Toshiba Holds HD DVD Players until April

Toshiba announced today that it is delaying the launch of its first HD DVD next-generation DVD players until mid-April, to coincide with the availability of the first movies in HD DVD format. Toshiba did not give precise availability dates, but Toshiba spokesperson Junko Furuta said the company is working with studios and retailers to work out launch dates.

Last week, Warner Bros. announced its first HD DVD movie titles would be available April 18 rather than in sync with Toshiba’s’s planned March 28 HD DVD player launch. Furuta said Toshiba has begun taking pre-orders for D DVD players in 40 major U.S. cities; Toshiba’s HD-XA1 and HD-A1 players carry suggested prices of $799 and $499, respectively.

Japanese electronics giant Toshiba announced today that it plans to begin selling HD DVD players in North America in March 2006, a full three months ahead of Blu-Ray players to be offered by companies like Sony and Pioneer.

Toshiba’s first HD DVD players dubbed the HD-XA1 and HD-A1 will be priced at $799 and $499. Toshiba says content from major Hollywood studios should be available in HD DVD format by the time the players hit the market. The company claims both models will offer high definition images, crystal clear audio, and enhanced functionality including “iHD” navigation.

TriDef DVD Player Pushes 3D View

DDD Group has announced the completion of the development of a ground breaking 3D conversion solution capable of playing conventional DVD discs in 3D on the latest ‘glasses free’ 3D displays. The newTriDef DVD Player allows any [Hollywood] movie to be viewed in 3D without requiring special pre-formatting of the DVD disc.

From today, the TriDef DVD Player will be offered to licensees of DDD’s TriDef software products and it marks an important milestone in the future development of consumer markets for 3D displays by enabling real time conversion to 3D.
