InTempo Launches DAB-Enabled iPod Dock

InTempo Launches DAB-Enabled iPod Dock

Peripheral-maker Intempo unveiled a new iPod speaker dock recently with a twist: integrated Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) radio.

The gloss-black RDI features 30 watts of output, an integrated subwoofer, a remote control, adjustable bass and treble, an FM tuner, and of course, DAB compatibility. DAB is a format for broadcasting high-quality 192 kbps digital audio over the air. While mainly used in Europe, stations also exist in Canada, Australia, Singapore and other countries.

“The RDI is high quality audio; it is the only model on the market at this price point with tweeters, bass and treble control, operated manually or via the remote,”  said Intempo’s marketing manager Katie Richards, in a statement.

Meridian G Series Adds DAB Digital Radio

The first model available will be the G91DAB DVD-Audio/video player/controller system, followed by the G51DAB receiver and G01DAB preamplifier.

DAB Digital Radio is popular outside the USA, and is currently available to over 300 million people in almost 40 countries, with over 600 different services. The system, which uses a compressed digital streaming format based on MPEG, is popular in Canada and throughout Western Europe, with Britain and Germany leading the way. In Canada, 35% of the overall population is already covered by DAB which ups to 50% around freeway corridors, while British coverage is estimated at 90% and Germany, 80%. In most places, DAB carries existing stations as well as new broadcasters who are transmitting only on digital radio.

CEA Fires Back At RIAA

Proposed regulatory restraints on digital audio broadcasting (DAB) threaten to stifle innovation, chill technological progress, and deny U.S. consumers the non-commercial recording rights upon whichthey have come to rely, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) argued today in comments filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The filing came in response to a Notice of Inquiry(NOI) issued by the FCC regarding DAB content control.

“This NOI is the latest example of the content community – in this case the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) – seeking to limit consumers’ recording rights and rollback the landmark ‘Betamax’ decision, which maintains that manufacturers have the right to sell a product if it is capable of any commercially significant non-infringing uses,” said CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. “Interfering with radio broadcasters’ shift to digital broadcasting would choke off advancement and modernization. Not only is that un-American, it’s totally without merit.”
