Electronics giant Sony is continuing its assault on the Amazon Kindle, today announcing another new ebook reader: the Sony Reader Daily Edition. The Daily Edition directly addresses some of the points where Kindle fans could argue they had an advantage: the Daily Edition touts a slightly larger 7-inch E-Ink display that can handle 16 levels of greyscale, and the unit will sport an integrated 3G modem to provide free 3G wireless connectivity to the Sony eBook Store from AT&T. And, once partnerships are in place, the Daily Edition will be able to check out ebooks from libraries using their library cards—users just download ebooks and transfer them to the reader, and the books automatically expire when the lending period is over—no late fees.

Google Says Viacom Suit Threatens Internet
Remember Viacom’s $1 billion copyright infringement suit against Google, claiming video sharing site YouTube consistently enabled users to post unauthorized copies of Viacom content—like clips from South Park and The Daily Show? The case has been pending for over a year, but a new round of filings is ratcheting up the tension between the companies, and may indicate hopes for an amicable settlement are dwindling. In documents filed with the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, Google is asserting that YouTube "goes far beyond its legal obligations" in enabling copyright owners to flag infringing content—and, moreover, that Viacom’s action to make hosting services liable for infringing content "threatens the way hundreds of millions of people legitimately exchange information."
Amazon Launches One Blog to Rule Them All
About the same time Google was killing off Froogle Amazon, the big online bookseller, was killing off one of their online offerings as well. The Amazon Plog, which was a "personalized, targeted blog based on your purchases", was eliminated by Amazon and replaced by a new blog with an easier to remember name.
The Amazon Daily Blog, as described by an Amazon employee, is an evolution of Amazon’s blogging platform and something which will be available to all Amazon visitors regardless of whether or not they register. This new blog draws content off of other Amazon editorial blogs amassed around the giant online retailer’s Web site to create one single repository from which Amazon shoppers can get their news.
