There’s no doubt that it’s been a bad couple weeks for T-Mobile Sidekick users, with Microsoft and T-Mobile announcing earlier this week, after days of spotty service, that personal data stored on the service had “almost certainly” been lost. But now there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel: Microsoft’s Roz Ho—formerly head of Microsoft’s Macintosh Business Unit and now corporate VP for Microsoft’s Premium Mobile Services division—says that Microsoft has recovered “most, if not all, customer data”. Microsoft says it is working with T-Mobile to restore user data as fast as it can, starting with personal contacts. After that, the restoration process will move on to calendars, notes, to-do items, photographs, and those all-important gaming high scores.

Microsoft Buys Phone Maker Danger
Microsoft is leaning more heavily into the mobile industry, announcing today it is acquiring mobile phone maker Danger Inc. In addition to developing the fad-creating Sidekick phone for T-Mobile, the Palo Alto-based Danger develops a mobile platform that combines mobile messaging, Web browsing, social networking, entertainment, and personal information management; Microsoft will work to integrate these services with its existing mobile solutions to create “industry-leading” mobile entertainment and communications technologies. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Danger And Sharp Announce Partnership
Based upon the license of Danger’s hardware reference design and client software, Sharp will manufacture, market and distribute jointly-developed products that connect to Danger’s serviceinfrastructure — Danger’s hosted client-server technology which optimizes the transfer of data over wireless networks, resulting in a compelling user experience and efficient use of networkresources.
The business collaboration between Danger and Sharp meets the needs of both companies and is expected to generate a synergistic effect on their combined worldwide business for wireless operators. Danger has long stated an interest in securing major branded manufacturers to manage the hardware aspects of its business, and to enable the company to focus on its award-winning software and services for wireless carriers. Sharp Corporation has recently expanded its mobile handset business in Europe and is focused on continued expansion in both European and North American markets.
Danger Zone Expands
The Danger Hiptop smartphone is now available on opposite sides of the globe, thanks to new carrier deals recently announced by the company. In addition, they will now support Instant Messaging via the Yahoo IM protocol.
In a new deal with ONE, a network operator in Austria, the Danger Hiptop will be available to Austrian customers starting on 25 May. ONE is the second European carrier to offer the hybrid phone/data Hiptop, after Germany’s E-Plus. The Hiptop will sell for 449 EUR (approximately $290 USD), with a flat rate service plan available for 19.90 EUR per month. That is in addition to basic voice plans.
