Blue Raven MediaMates Offer 7-Inch Screens

Blue Raven Technologies has introduced its new MediaMate 7040 and 7080 all-in-one portable media players and DVRs, offering storage capacities of 40 and 80 GB (respectively) and large 7-inch screens designed to make viewing video content possible without holding the units up your the tip of your nose and squinting.

“Blue Raven designed this product by prioritizing the features consumers care about most: price, ease of use, and a clear, large picture,” said Blue Raven’s President Glen Kashgegian in a release. “By bringing these key features together into the MediaMate, we believe this is the first product to make portable media players a viable category for most consumers.”

Maxell’s 160GB DAT Tapes Will Sell in May

Consumer options for data back-up just got a little bigger, literally. Maxell announced Friday that it will roll out its new 160GB DAT tapes in May. Although they won’t set any size records in the general world of tape storage, the new tapes will have the largest capacity for the DDS format, which is commonly considered to be an affordable entry-level tape system.

Maxell achieved the boost in capacity by widening the tape and re-engineering the cartridge design. Despite the changes, the new tapes will still fall in the same form factor, which means they will be backward compatible with existing DAT 72 and DDS-4 systems.

Mvix Takes HD Video Wireless

Virginia’s Mvix hasjust taken the wraps off its new Mvix Wireless HD Media Center—which is also know under a snappy MX-760HD monicker. Loaded with features, this LInux-based system offers wireless media—including HD video via Wi-Fi wireless networking (with WEP support), and can be packed with 200 to 750 GB of hard drive space to store media files.

Digital photography gear maker MediaGear has announced its new HD2Go portable photo viewer, offering a large 3.6-inch 320 by 240 pixel true color LCD display in a portable picture viewer with a 20 GB hard drive which can hold as many as 10,000 photos

Iomega ScreenPlay Features DVD Buttons

Iomega Corporation today announced a new external hard drive unit which they feel is well suited towards multimedia uses. The 60GB ScreenPlay Multimedia Drive is available now for $219.95.

The ScreenPlay, said Iomega, can hold up to 240,000 photos, 90 hours of DVD-quality video or 1,100 hours of digital music. Chief among the features of this USB 2.0 external hard drive is built-in multimedia playback capability through a TV or A/V system via its audio and video outputs. A set of DVD-style playback buttons and on-screen TV navigation helps users select a video, song list, or slide show to play. A wireless remote is included to help control the ScreenPlay’s functions.
