In a move designed to expand its footprint in cloud computing—and crank up the intensity of its competition with Microsoft—Internet giant Google has announced it is launching a reseller program for its Google Apps suite of cloud-based business productivity software. Under the program, Google is throwing open its doors to 50 companies, who—if accepted into the program—will be able to buy the Google Apps Premier Edition for 20 percent off Google’s the $50/year price and offer it to their own customers at a profit. Google will provide the support, training, customer integration, and marketing tools; the resellers just have to get clients on board and manage their own relationships with their customers.

Google Takes Video to Businesses
Google has added a new component to its Google Apps Premier Edition service offering: video sharing via a new offering called Google Video. Google video lets users browse to find a video on their local system, then upload it to Google to share with colleagues, friends, or the whole world. Videos can be viewed in standard Web browsers (even on the Flash-free iPhone), and users can add ratings and tags to video offers, and download videos for offline viewing. Videos an also be embedded within an application; for instance, an enterprise support system could tap into a video showing a user how to fill out forms.
Google Sites Creates Team Web Pages
After gaining steam with Google Docs, Google’s Web-based alternative to Microsoft’s traditional Office suite, the Menlo Park giant rolled yet another Microsoft competitor onto the Web on Thursday. Google Sites challenges Microsoft Sharepoint by offering a simplified way to build team Web sites where groups can easily collaborate and share information with one another.
“Creating a team web site has always been too complicated, requiring dedicated hardware and software as well as programming skills,” said Dave Girouard, Google’s vice president of enterprise, in a statement. “Now with Google Sites, anyone can create an entirely customized site in minutes and invite others to contribute. We are literally adding an edit button to the web.”
Google Introduces New Hosted Site Search
For less than the price of one share of Google’s coveted stock, small business owners can now buy their very own implementations of the company’s search algorithm for their business Web sites. Google recently announced hosted search for small businesses which is hosted on their Custom Search. This gives a new option for small businesses wanting to implement a reliable search without ponying up $1,995 for the Google Search appliance.
Google Acquires Postini for $625 Million
Last week GrandCentral was Google’s latest new toy, this week it’s Postini. The Internet giant announced its $625 million acquisition Monday morning, which is of course still subject to closing agreements and is scheduled to conclude in the third quarter of 2007.
Unlike with GrandCentral’s acquisition, we won’t have to speculate about how Google will be integrating the company’s technology with its own. Postini’s claim to fame is on-demand communications security, which they already provide to 35,000 businesses and 10 million users worldwide. According to the press release, this security will be worked into Google Apps, including Gmail, Calendar, Talk, Docs & Spreadsheets, and the Personal Start Page.
Google Offers Businesses Premium Apps
Google has announced it plans to go after the likes of Microsoft, SAP, Oracle, and IBM with Google Apps Premier Edition, offering businesses ramped up versions of its Web-based Google applications with phone support, 10 GB of storage, and 99.9 percent uptime guarantees for $50/year per person.
Google Apps Premier Edition will roll together the company’s GMail email service, along with Google Calendar, Google Talk, the Web authoring tool Start Page, along with word processing and spreasheet features with Google Docs & Spreadsheets. Google also announced that GMail now supports Gmail for Blackberry mobile devices, widely deployed in enterprise and government settings.
Google Technology Used In Search Appliance
E-Commerce News has posted an interesting article about Google’s enterprise search solutions based on an interview with Google Enterprise general manager Dave Girouard.
“The funny part is it’s easier to find box scores from the 1957 World Series than it is to find last quarter’s sales presentation in the enterprise. While Web search has gotten really good, enterprise search has stagnated, and that’s why we really believe it’s a problem that needs to be solved and that Google has a unique set of capabilities to solve it,” Girouard said.
