UK Team Wins Pro-Gaming Prize

Britain might not often win at sports these days, but a British team has taken home the top prize at the second year of the Championship Gaming Series (CGS) in Los Angeles, taking home the Mountain Dew trophy and the $500,000 check that goes a long with it.

The Birmingham Salvo also had the two most valuable players of the tournament, Dean "Picaso" Sutton and David "Daveyskills" Kelly, the BBC reports.

It all began back in March, when players competed to win places on a CGS team. Those who succeeded were given contracts and monthly salaries as they took part in competitions. From an initial 18 teams the number was whittled down to the eight who took part in the grand final.

Resistance: Fall Of Man Under Fire Again

Resistance: Fall Of Man Under Fire AgainA few months ago Manchester Cathedral demanded an apology from Sony and went so far as to consider legalaction over the use of the building for a violent scene in the game Resistance: Fall of Man, without permission. Now the Church is up in arms again over the fact that the game has been nominated fora BAFTA award.   The Dean of Manchester, Reverend Rogers Morgan Govender received his apology back then, but now he and other church leaders are demandingthat BAFTA drop the game’s nomonation.   “It is a disgrace that ‘Resistance: Fall of Man’ has been short-listed for a BAFTA," Govender told TechNewsWorld. "Sony has admitted that it did not have permission to film or use Manchester Cathedral in its computer game and said, and I quote, ‘We areconfident that there is no legal requirement for us to seek such permission.’"   Sony never pulled the game from the shelves, and must be happy at the nomination, especially as it’sreceived several mediocre reviews. Certainly a renewed round of publicity in the wake of the nomination won’t hurt sales at all. Sony has insisted all along that the game was never meant totake place in the real world, but in an alternate Europe during the 1950s.

U.S. Reclaims Title as Top IT Country

The United States jumped four places to reclaim the top spot in the latest edition of the Networked Readiness Index from the World Economic Forum. Last year’s winner, Singapore, slipped to number two: the remaining top ten nations are Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Canada, Taiwan, Sweden, Switzerland, and the U.K.

“The Networked Readiness Index (NRI) has become a globally accepted benchmark of an economy’s participation in the networked economy. The NRI provides a useful indicator to decision leaders from the private and public sectors about the role of technology in driving the competitiveness and productivity of nations,” said Soumitra Dutta, Professor of Business and Technology and Dean of Executive Education at INSEAD.
