Dell Gets Slimy with Nickelodeon Netbook
Computer manufacturers know that the way to get long-term customers is to hook them while they’re young—so it’s not much of a coincidence that computer maker Dell has partnered with Nickelodeon on a new Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition, a version of the Inspiron Mini 10v netbook with special slime-themed kid-oriented artwork, custom wallpapers and icons, and an animated custom interface that ties in directly with landing points on Nick.com so kids can keep up with Spongebob Squarepants and all their other Nickelodeon favorites.
The computers will be on sale through Wal-mart and from Dell directly; Dell also plans two additional Design Studio themes based on Nickelodeon properties Spongebob Squarepants and iCarly.
Mac Prices Double PCs on Average
It’s common knowledge that Macs carry a premium over their Windows-based competition. Anyone who has ever peeked at a Sunday newspaper circular knows that Mac buyers ante up more, but crunching the numbers on just how much churns up quite an impressive statistic: they cost double on average.
Eweek’s own Mac advocate Joe Wilcox consulted the marketing research firm NPD Group in his quest for numbers and found that on average, PC notebooks sell for $700 while Mac notebooks sell for $1,515, 2.1 times as much. If that sounds like old news, it’s not: The gap has actually widened significantly in just two years as PC prices plunge lower and Macs hover around the same. Back in June 2006, for instance, the average PC notebook ran for $877, while Macs were still at $1,574, putting them at 1.8 times as much.
Dell Moves Into Staples
Computer maker Dell today unveiled a new partner in its retail strategy, announcing that office and business supply chain Staples will begin carrying selected Dell merchandise as of November 11. Both the retail locations and online stores will offer Dell notebook and desktop computers, long with monitors, printers, ink, and toner.
Free Dell Notebooks with AOL Broadband
The UK mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse has annoucned a plan whereby consumers who sign up for two years of Internet access via AOL Broadbandwill get a coupon for a free Dell Inspiron notebook computer. The move is designed to bring new customers to theincreasingly-saturated broadband market, and counters a similar promotion being run by mobile operator Orange UK.
Carphone Warehouse’s deal with AOL Broadband costs subscribers £19.99 a month (a little over $40 US); with a two year commitment, consumers would pay a total of £479.76 (just over $985 US) for two years of broadband service and a notebook to go with it. The offer isn’t expected to appeal to technologically hip who are already using broadband and mobile services; instead, its’ designed to bring new customers and older consumers to the market—and while the companies may not be making much money on this deal, these are the types of consumers who tend to be very loyal over time.
Dell Offers LoJack for Laptops
Computer maker Dell has announced it is teaming with Absolute Software to offer CompuTrace LoJack for Laptops as a theft recovery service available with the purchase of CompleteCare Accidental Damage Service with selected Dell Inspiron notebook computers with one to our year warranties, or as a standalone product on the Dell Software and Peripherals Site. Price for the service will range from $99 to $139.
“Losing a computer is costly, even potentially devastating, when you consider the value of the data and personal information stored on today’s notebooks,” said Rocky Mountain, VP of Dell’s U.S. Consumer business. “Combining accidental damage protection with theft recovery service is a huge win for consumers who want increased security.”
