Dell Intros X38-based Precision T3400

Shuttle isn’t the only company rolling out X38-based systems today: computer maker Dell has introduced its Precision T3400 desktop system, boasting the Intel X38 chipset, either Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Extreme processors, support for up to 8 GB of RAM, and price tags starting at just $1,000.

“The Dell Precision T3400 redefines the levels of performance and flexibility customers should expect for mainstream workstations,” said Dell Product Group VP Vivek Mohindra, in a statement. “We are reinforcing our market leadership position by delivering leading-edge features such as dual graphics and higher bandwidth processors and memory that customers could not get in this type of system before.”

Xbox vs. PS3: The Wii Lesson

The title of this article sounds like I’m writing for an Irish publication of some type, and I suddenly feel the need to talk about the Wii people and a pot of gold.

That pot of gold has been elusive to both Microsoft and Sony of late. Sony has been in search of sales for the PS3, and Microsoft has just instituted a massive repair policy change and taken over a $1B (hint: that is about what a small aircraft carrier costs) charge to earnings.

Dell Goes the Distance with Sprint

Computer maker Dell has announced it is now offering integrated mobile broadband options from Sprint in selected Dell Latitude, Precision, and XPS notebook systems in the form of the Dell Wireless 5700-S mobile broadband EVDO mini-card. The solution fits into Dell’s HyperConnect wireless offerings alongside mobile broadband options from Verizon and Cingular, enabling mobile users to connect to the Internet without doing the old bob-and-weave through traffic hoping to find a Wi-Fi hotspot. Sprint’s EVDO network offers bandwidths of 400 to 700 Kbps, with peaks of 2 Mbps.

Dell Unveils New Mobile Workstations

Dell last week unveiled two new high performance laptops which are targeted towards professional workstation users and make use of Intel Core Duo processors. The new Dell Precision M90 and Dell Precision M65 have starting prices of $2,239 and $1,849 respectively and are available now.

The Precision M90 and Precision M65, said Dell, sport a range of features designed to satisfy the needs of engineers, artists, developers and other like minded professionals. The M90’s feature set, depending upon configuration, can include up to 512MB of Nvidia Quadro FX OpenGL graphics, up to 4GB DDR2 memory, a 17” display with up to WUXGA (1920 x 1200) resolution and DVI/SVGA video outputs.

Dell Recalls 22,000 Notebook Batteries

Dell and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission today announced a voluntary recall of approximately 22,000 Dell notebook computer batteries. The reason for the recall is that the batteries could overheat, which could pose a fire risk.

Dell said they had received three reports of batteries overheating, with the incidents involving damage to a tabletop, a desktop, and minor damage to personal effects. No injuries have been reported.

Dell Laptop HDs Get Extra Shock Protection

Dell customers who are afraid of bumping their laptop’s hard drive too hard and damaging it might be interested to take note of the company’s new shock-resistant hard drive. Announced today, Dell is selling these specialized drives for $129.

The shock-resistant hard drive, Dell said, is available for the Latitude D610 notebook as well as the Precision M20 mobile workstation. It is 30GB and contains a special dampening material inside the drive enclosure which reportedly can provide up to a 145 percent in shock protection. This special material will supplement Dell’s existing protective technology.

Dell Intros Dual-CPU Systems

The Dell Precision 380 redefines productivity for professionals in the entry workstation segment by helping to increase scalability and reliability through an innovative product design. In addition to including the Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 64-bit dual-core processor, the Dell Precision 380 features 64-bit Pentium 4 600 series processors with 2MB L2 cache. The new workstation can support up to 8GB(a) of memory(b), which enables customers working with large data sets to experience high productivity through great performance and flexibility. This allows engineers and creative professionals who rely on Independent Software Vendor-certified (ISV) workstation technology to do more and work fast with maximum uptime.

Are The Apple Power Mac Ads ‘Misleading’?

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said that the G5 was not the fastest computer “in all circumstances for all applications”.

The first claim was based on independent tests comparing the Apple computer with two of its competitors – the Dell Dimension 8300 and the Dell Precision 650.

The ASA said it took expert advice and concluded that the claim could not be justified.

“It understood from the advice that the advertisers’ tests showed the Power Mac G5 was faster than the other two processors on some applications under certain conditions, but not that it was the fastest processor in all circumstances for all applications,” said the ruling.
