Earlier this year, Delta Airlines made the news as the first major U.S. air carrier to announce plans for fleet-wide in-flight Internet service. And Delta seems to be making good on that promise, with in-flight Internet set to launch as soon as tomorrow. But while the company had promised to roll out the service to its entire 300+ domestic fleet by mid-2009, things may get scaled back: Delta will be launching the service on just six planes, and expects to only have ten up and running by the end of 2008. Initially, Delta had hoped to have 75 planes equipped by the end of 2008.

Delta Promises In-Flight Wi-Fi in 2009
Delta Airlines has become the first major U.S. air carrier to announce plans for fleet-wide in-flight Wi-Fi service, promising to roll out broadband Wi-Fi on its entire 330-plane domestic fleet by the second half of 2009. Delta will be installing Aircell’s Gogo system on its planes, enabling customers with notebook computers, PDAs, smartphones, and other Wi-Fi savvy devices to access the Internet…and, of course, services like corporate VPNs, business and personal email, and (we imagine) the odd Web site.
Gears of War Taking on the Big Screen
New Line Cinema has snapped up the film rights to Epic Games’ hit Xbox 360 title Gears of War and attached Australian screenwriter Stuart Beattie (Collateral), who will work with lead game designer Cliff Blezinski to craft a screenplay. Marty Bowen is on baord as a producer with partner Wyck Godfrey.
Gears of War sold more than three million copies in its first 10 weeks of availability; it also took over the top spot on Microsoft’s Xbox Live service and garnered numerous industry awards. The game is set on the planet Sera, where players take on the roles of soldiers in Delta Squad as they fight the Locust Horde, monstrous creatures which emerge from the depths of the planet.
GPS Navigation Improves Traffic Safety?
Despite some well-publicized instance where a few drivers have driven into construction zones, into buildings, and off roads because their GPS systems told them to, a new study (Dutch) from Dutch research institute TNO purports to find that the use of GPS satellite navigation systems actually improves driving and traffic safety.
PodZinger Offers Full-Text Podcast Searches
Podzinger, a division of BBN Technologies, today announced the launch of its Podzinger podcast search engine. Unlike podcast directories such as those offered by Apple or Yahoo, Podzinger applies BNN’s speech recognition technology to podcast audio itself and creates a searchable index of the transcribed text. Users then search for terms and words in podcasts the same way they would use any other search engine. The Fat Lady Sings a Song
Song, the low cost arm of Delta Airlines which, among other features, offered flyers a high tech in flight entertainment system for their viewingpleasure, is set to be folded back into its parent company. Delta made this announcement on Friday. Delta, whichaccording to Reuters is currently operatingin bankruptcy, is doing this in what seems to be a move by the company to correct mistakes of the past as it seeks to reorganize. Song was seen as a competitor to upstart discount airline JetBlue, which offers DirecTV satellite television programming for every ticketed passenger. Song’s attempt to counter JetBlue in the tech area amounted tooffering 24 channels of live television, 10 on-demand video channels, interactive video games and over 1,600 MP3s. Though Delta will be folding Song by May 2006, it will incorporate Song’s personalentertainment options on all transcontinental Delta flights beginning in fall 2006. “As Delta continues its transformation to become a more customer-focused airline, we are incorporating thebest of Song into the best of Delta,†said Gerald Grinstein, Delta’s Chief Executive Officer. “Our new Song service will set the standard in transcontinental travel, making Delta the first choice forcustomers on these routes.â€

Use Kodak Cameras at T-Mobile HotSpots
Eastman Kodak Company and T-Mobile USA Inc., which operates the largest carrier owned Wi-Fi (802.11b) wireless broadband network in the United States, today announced an agreement to simplify online picture sharing using Wi-Fi outside of the home or office. Owners of the new KODAK EASYSHARE-ONE digital camera will have integrated access to T-Mobile HotSpot service, available at more than 5,000 convenient locations across the U.S.
All EASYSHARE-ONE camera purchasers will initially receive a free, camera-specific T-Mobile HotSpot trial (terms to be determined). T-Mobile HotSpot subscription plans will be available for the EASYSHARE-ONE camera beginning later this year (pricing and other terms to be determined).
