Apple Admits It Can’t Produce Enough Of The iPhone 3GS

Apple Admits It Can

Apple has come out and said it can’t keep up with the demand for the new iPhone 3GS, but it’s ramping up production, and still planning to have the handset in 20 new countries next month.

Company COO Tim Cook told the BBC:

"The demand has been staggering almost in every country that we’ve shipped in."

Apple sold 5.2 million iPhones in the second quarter, which is a staggering seven times the amount for the same quarter in 2008.

In a conference call about quarterly earnings, company chief financial officer Peter Oppenhaimer said:

High Definition Comes to Amazon Video On Demand

Amazon.com is taking its digital video rental service high-def, announcing that its Video On Demand service is now offering more than 500 movies and televisions shows in high-definition format. And those selections are available across the range of devices that support Amazon Video On Demand, including selected TiVo and Roku set-top boxes as well as selected Sony and (now) Panasonic televisions.

Material available in high definition includes movies like Frost/Nixon and Twilight, as well as television series like Smallville and Gossip Girl. High-definition movies are available for $3.99 to $4,99; television shows are available for $2.99 each.

LG Sees Growing Market for Small LCD TVs

LG Sees Growing Market for Small LCD TVs

It might seem like the transition from bulky CRTs to sleek flat-screen displays in living rooms around the world is not just about “flat” but also about “huge,” with manufacturers racing to deliver larger and larger displays, presumably in the belief that most consumers want the “big screen” experience akin to a theater.

But apparently plenty of video viewers still want comparatively small screens. The CEO of South Korea’s LG Display Co. Kwon Young-soo says demand for small-screen LCD televisions is stronger than expected, particularly 26-inch and smaller displays. The unanticipated demand has caught the industry a bit by surprise, and may help to ease an anticipated over-supply (and price war) for LCD panels beginning in 2009 as an array of new LCD manufacturing facilities come online.

Microsoft Claims Xbox 360 Shortage

Microsoft Claims Xbox 360 Shortage

It may be hard to believe that at video game console that’s been on the market two years could suddenly be in such high demand that retailers are experiencing shortages—but that’s exactly what Microsoft’s head of global marketing Jeff Bell said in an interview with Reuters. Microsoft sold 1.3 million Xbox 360’s during the end-of-year holidays, but Bell is claiming the company failed to judge post-holiday demand and didn’t get enough units to retailers. “We are really running short of product here in the United States,” said Bell. “You could say we misjudged demand.”

Hitachi to Increase Plasma Production

“Combined with the monthly output of 100,000 units at Miyazaki Works’ second plant, FHP will now have a monthly production capacity of 200,000 units the second half of fiscal 2006, and 300,000 units by the end of March 2009.

The move comes at a time when demand for plasma displays is soaring, with suppliers having difficulty filling orders.

Much of the demand has been from the flat-panel TV market, where plasma display advocates say they have a clear edge over liquid crystal displays in the over 37-inch screen category.”

US Phone Subscribers to Reach 236M By 2010

According to U.S. Mobile Markets: Analysis & Forecasts, the latest report from consumer technology think-tank, The Diffusion Group, more than 236 million U.S. consumers will subscribe to some form of mobile telephone service by 2010, an increase in demand brought on by (1) continued expansion of 2.5G and 3G networks in major metropolitan areas, and (2) new demand for improved access technologies that enable push email and other services across converged networks.

“Although net subscriber growth will continue to slow dramatically over the next five years, the promise of improved mobile access technologies and the new services they enable are cause for optimism,” says Ed Wallace, consulting analyst with The Diffusion Group. “New networks mean new services, and new services entail new sources of incremental revenue and a generally more “sticky” service offering, especially when bundled with wireline services.”

PS2 And Xbox Low On Supply

“Major shortages of the PlayStation 2 console have been ongoing since the end of Summer in some areas, but have reached a head following the launch of the redesigned slimline “PStwo” – which massively increased demand for the system.

Although Microsoft is believed to be benefiting from Sony’s difficulty in fulfilling demand for the PS2, the situation isn’t entirely rosy for the rival firm either, with US retail sources indicating that Xbox stock is also in short supply.”

PC Market Strong On European Demand

From IDC’s press release:

Strong demand in Europe as well as better than expected results in Canada and Latin America boosted shipments to 39.7 million, roughly 1-2% ahead of forecast. Aggressive prices continue to fuel both consumer and commercial replacements, particularly for desktop systems. While portable growth remains strong, demand shifted toward desktops during the second quarter.

“Demand in Europe, supported by the strong Euro and aggressive promotions, was the biggest driver of the quarter,” said Loren Loverde, director of IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. “Consumer demand and commercial replacements seem fairly steady across the major regions with growth slightly slower than expected in Asia, and faster in Europe, Canada and Latin America. Overall growth remains solid and strength in Europe bodes well for the second half of the year.”

More Luxury Hotels Check In Flat-panel TVs

Hotels across the country — from Los Angeles’ Four Seasons to Caesars Pocono Resorts in Pennsylvania, where couples will be able to gawk at a 35-inch flat-panel TV while cavorting in a bathtub shaped like a champagne glass — are adding them.

Demand by hotels for the big TVs is heating up, says K.C. Kavanagh, spokeswoman for Starwood Hotels, owner of the Westin, Sheraton, W and St. Regis brands. ”Where once it was a novelty, now it’s becoming more of a priority.”
