China could be $1 trillion green tech market

China potentially could be a $500 billion to $1 trillion a year market for environmentally sustainable "green technologies," a group of businesses and experts said in a report Thursday that urges governments to ease the way for such initiatives.

The report by the China Greentech Initiative, a group of more than 80 leading technology companies, non-governmental organizations and policy advisers, pinpointed opportunities from 300 potential green technology options for China, spanning energy, water, buildings, transportation and industry.

But government support is key, said Richard Gledhill, global leader of Climate Change & Carbon Market Services in London for PricewaterhouseCoopers, a consultancy that helped head the research.

U.K. Housewives Online Most

A new survey by global marketing information group TNS has asked questions of some 27,000 people in 16 countries to find out about web use and also the faith of respondents in online and traditional media – and it’s turned up a few interesting results.

Residents of Asian countries spend the greatest amount of their leisure time online, headed by the Chinese, who spend 44% of their free time on the Web, with under 25s there claiming 50% of their leisure time is spent online (against a 36% international average). In the Nordic countries online time claims the lowest percentage of leisure time, just 15% in Denmark.

Google Tallies 2008 Top Searches

Google Tallies 2008 Top Searches

Internet search giant Google has released its 2008 End-of-Year Zeitgeist, noting what was hot worldwide in Internet searches for the year. Unlike search engines like AOL and Yahoo who base their end-of-year summaries mostly on the frequency of terms—hence allowing Britney Spears to rule the search engine listings for years on end—Google bases its Zeitgeist both on frequency and on the novelty of terms. In other words, 2008’s zeitgeist is more about what users searched for in 2008 that they were not searching for in 2007. Google claims their method is more indicative of the “spirit of the times”…and it definitely produces some different results.

Apple Faces iTunes Challenge in Norway

Back in 2006, Norway’s consumer Ombudsmen sided with critics that claimed the Norwegian version of the iTunes store violated consumers’ rights by tying content purchased there to Apple’s iPods and iTunes software. (Presumably, that would now be extended to include things like the iPhone and Apple TV.) The issue may have falling off the international radar, but Norway hasn’t forgotten about it: the consumer Ombudsman Björn Erik Thon is taking Apple before Norway’s Market Council in an effort to get the company to open up the iTunes store to devices other than the iPod.

Broadband For All Europeans?

Broadband For All Europeans?

Should everyone have the right to broadband Internet access? That’s the issue before the European Commission at the moment, and they’re leaning toward yes. They’re bringing forward reviewing what basic telecoms services Europeans can expect, according to the BBC.

Under EC rules, when the majority of people in the European Union enjoy a telecom service, it becomes one all Europeans should have access to. But at the moment, figures indicate that only 36% of EU citizens have broadband access.

However, when announcing the review, EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding said:

TeliaSonera Makes iPhone Deal

Sweden’s TeliaSonera has announced it has reached an agreement with Apple to offer the iPhone in several Nordic and Baltic nations later this year, including Sweden (of course), Norway, Denmark, and Finland, as well as the Baltic nations of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.

As with other recent announcement of deals with international mobile operators, the announcement was brief and offered no information on pricing, dates of availability, or what version of the iPhone would be offered to users. Apple is widely expected to introduce a 3G version of the iPhone early next month at its WWDC developer conference.

Zattoo Streams European TV

Zattoo has launched a service in several European countries that allows users to stream terrestrial TV channels from their own countries (plus a few others fromabroad) to the computers.   The legal service uses a proprietary player, which is available as a free download, and works on both PC and Mac. Currently available in Belgium, Denmark, France,Germany, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK, the company has big plans to expand not only the number of countries included, but also the number of continents.   It works as a peer-to-peernetwork, with the watched program flowing from one computer to another. In the UK, viewers can catch a total of 29 channels, including all five terrestrials, BBC3 and BBC 4, Al-Jazeera, ABC News Now, as well as news from France and Germany and, most importantly for some, the PokerChannel.   Alexandra Illes, manager for Zattoo in the UK, said:   “People often have to compromise their viewing choices with other household members, such as their flatmates orpartner,. Zattoo helps eliminate this as anyone with a computer and internet connection can watch TV via the internet. It’s just like owning another TV."

Euro Online Banking Not Secure Enough

Euro Online Banking Not Secure EnoughIn Europe people tend to visit the website of their bank more often than anywhere else online – followed by retail sites.   But a new survey, run across Europe by YouGov and commissioned by VeriSign, also showed that the customers don’t believe those banks, along with credit cardcompanies and retail sites are doing a good enough job of protecting personal information, according to Vnunet.   Although 80% of online shoppers in Denmark(along with 77% in Sweden, 72% in France, 65% in the UK and 57% in Germany) log on at least weekly to sites where they reveal person information, in many instances less than half of them believe thattheir information is being adequately safeguarded.   Additionally, they feel the responsibility for that protection should lie with the bank, credit card company, or retail site, rather thanwith the customer.   VeriSign’s SSL manager, Jon Kerr, said,   "We are seeing more and more theft of consumers’ personal information. The study shows that online customers arebecoming more aware of the risks involved in passing on their details over sites that may not be secure. It is the organizations that will fail to benefit as they will lose out on an increasinglyskeptical customer base who expect their online safety to be taken care of."

Amazon Loves LoveFilm

Amazon Loves LoveFilmIt’s February, almost Valentine’s Day, so it’s perhaps apt that Amazon has fallen for LoveFilm. Thecompany is making a cash investment in the online video rental service, large enough to become its biggest shareholder, and in return LoveFilm will take over the DVD rental business currently run byAmazon in both the UK and Germany, Vnunet reports.   Simon Calver, CEO at LoveFilm, said,   "LoveFilm International will ensure that AmazonEurope’s customers get the best possible DVD rental service. We will be delighted to welcome all Amazon Europe customers to the LoveFilm service."   The deal will bring Lovefilm’scustomer base to a total of 900,000 in the UK, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway, and Amazon will push the service on its British and German sites, although it’s still subject to regulatoryapproval.
