Microsoft isn’t making its vast profits any more, it’s shedding 5,000 jobs, and, according to a new company blog posting, it’s also going to delay its plans for a new data center in Des Moines, Iowa. The center was set to host Hotmail, Live Search and Windows Live services.

Apple Sued Over Touch-Screen Keyboard
Apple may be rolling in dough from the successful release of its iPhone, but all that money lying around also seems to have made the company a lawsuit magnet. First, a Chicago man sued Apple for the iPhone’s battery life limitations, and now a Florida company is claiming its touch-screen keyboard violates a seven-year-old patent it holds.
According to AppleInsider, SP Technologies formally lodged its complaint against Apple on Thursday, with a court in Tyler, Texas. The company’s patent, 6,784,873, is for a “Method and medium for computer readable keyboard display incapable of user termination.” The patent describes an input area “created by a computer program on a display capable of receiving touch-screen input,” that may “contain a keyboard which is an image map.”
Microsoft Settles Iowa Antitrust Suit
The case has already been to the Iowa Supreme Court three times, but today Microsoft agreed to settle an Iowa class action antitrust lawsuit against it for an undisclosed amount. Terms of the settlement could be released at a hearing in late April when the judge decides whether to accept the agreement, but for now all that has been disclosed is that Microsoft will contribute half of any unclaimed proceeds from the settlement to Iowa schools.
Americans World Video Game Champs
It was announced yesterday that the U.S. took home the gold from the 2005 World Cyber Games’ Grand Final in Singapore as they won two gold medals and one silver in Counter-Strike, Halo 2 and WarCraft III: Frozen Throne against a field of 700 competitors representing 67 countries.
Kyle Miller (Washington DC), Ronald Kim (Dallas, TX), Sal Garozzo (New York, NY), Josh Sievers (Des Moines, IA), and Mike So (Los Angeles, CA) comprise Team 3D, who repeated as gold medalists in Counter-Strike for the second year.
