It

eMachines has introduced a new EL1300 series of small form factor PCs that feature glossy all-white casings, user-friendly designs, and pricetags that may appeal to recession-wary consumers. The company has also introduced a new desktop PC monitor with a matching white design so users can get a complete PC system with a contemporary look without breaking their budgets.

“Alternative color choices have been making their way into notebook lines for some time now,” said eMachines desktop products senior manager Glenn Jystad, in a statement. “With the arrival of spring and summer, it’s the perfect time to introduce a fresh, clean alternative color choice to our desktops and monitors, bringing an exciting new look and feel to desktop PCs.”

Seagate Barracuda LP Hard Drives Offer Capacity, Lower Power Consumption

Seagate Barracuda LP Hard Drives Offer Capacity, Lower Power Consumption

Storage maker Seagate is looking to win over the hearts (and wallets) of eco-concious desktop computer users with its new Barracuda LP line of 3.5-inch desktop hard drives. Available in 1, 1.5, and 2 TB capacities, the drives spin at 5,900 rpm and the company claims they can consume as little as half the electricity of a typical desktop hard drive—although, over the entire life of the drive, Seagate is only claiming up to a 44 percent reduction in energy consumption. What’s more, up to 70 percent of the materials used in the drive can be recycled.

Dell Core i7 Systems Target Gamers

Dell Core i7 Systems Target Gamers

Computer maker Dell has introduced its first systems based on Intel’s new Core i7 “Nahalem” processor…and, surprising no one, the souped-up desktop systems target gamers and multimedia enthusiasts.

First up, Dell’s Studio XPS Desktop feature Core i7 processors running at 2.66 or 2.93 GHz, from 2 to 6 GB of DDR3 RAM (with support for up to 12 GB), and 64-bit editions of Windows Vista. The Studio XPS Desktop supports two internal drives for up to 1 TB of storage, has Blu-ray and DVD±RW options, gigabit Ethernet, a 19-in-1 memory card reader, and support for 7.1 audio. The system also boasts four USB 2.0 ports, IEEE 1394 and eSATA connectors, 802.11n wireless networking, three PCIe ×1 slots and one PCIe ×x16 slot for graphics, and a selection of ATI Radeon video cards available as options. Prices start at just $949 for a bare-bones unit, but “instant savings” make even fairly tricked out systems (with monitors) land around $1,500.

HP Debuts Eco-Friendly Desktops

HP has taken the wraps off two new desktop PCs the company is touting as not only up to 45 percent more efficient than equivalent PCs without power management technology, but they also ship in recyclable packaging that’s easier on the environment.

“The Phoenix and Verde desktops represent HP’s ongoing efforts to innovate and design for the environment,” said HP’s VP of marketing for worldwide consumer PCs John Cook, in a statement. “HP is committed to offering consumers and businesses computing alternatives that can reduce energy consumption and lessen their overall eco-footprint.”

Dell Adds New Studio Entertainment Desktops

Continuing with the sharply stylized angle that Dell first adopted with its Hybrid Studio Desktops in July, the company rolled out two more Studios intended for home entertainment on Wednesday. The  Studio Desktop and Studio Slim Desktop have been designed to fit in well alongside home entertainment equipment, and sport features to match.

While the Studio Desktop closely resembles Dell’s more standard desktops, but with a glossed-up piano-black fascia, the Slim Studio hacks off a decent chunk of its width, looking more like a video game console.

HP dc7900 PC Sports Virtual Browser

Technology giant Hewlet Packard has taken the wraps off a new collection of point-of-sale systems and a new dc7900 desktop PC that, normally, are exacty the sort of hardware we can’t wait to scuttle past in order to see something…well, cooler. But under the hood of that dc7900 desktop lies something interesting: the HP-Firefox Web browser. Instead of running as a normal desktop application, this version of FireFox runs in its own virtualized sandbox, meaning all downloads, cookies, and add-ons get saved in their own secured area. Something goes wrong—poof!—users can immediately reset their browser to a known-safe state, without sacrificing their bookmarks.

Acer X1200 Shrinks the Desktop

Tawian’s Acer—now owners of American computer maker Gateway—are looking to expand the popular size-shrinking motif they have running in their popular Eee line to desktop computers, starting with the new X1200 SFF. The new diminutive desktop systems are designed to offer the power and expandability of a conventional desktop, without taking up all the space, making all that noise, or costing all that money.

"Our innovative, low energy consumption desktop is a no-compromise solution providing desktop power, performance, and value in a compact form factor," said Acer America’s senior manager for retail desktops Stephanie Hatchel, in a statement. "Aspire X1200 was designed to be an appealing, easy to use media hub for making the most of entertainment."

Iomega Pushes eGo Hard Drives to 1 TB

Storage vendor Iomega—currently in the process of being acquired by EMC—is letting its desktop eGo external hard drives get very full of themselves: the 3.5-inch USB 2.0 drive is now available in capacities up to 1 TB.

"By applying the award-winning style of the eGo design to a desktop hard drive, Iomega is giving users a one-terabyte Super eGo that’s all about form and function, a beautiful and pleasing design for even the most data-intensive applications," said Iomega’s VP of marketing Peter Wharton, in a statement.

Lenovo Chases Green Ratings with M57 "Eco"

Though best known for its ThinkPad notebooks, Lenovo produces lesser-known ThinkCentre desktops as well, and expanded that line today with the release of the M57 “Eco.”The company bills the Intel-based small-form-factor PC it as its “most environmentally friendly desktop to date.”

Besides setting records among Lenovo computers, the M57 also became the first desktop PC ever to receive the Greenguard Institute’s Greenguard certification, which guarantees it to be free of over 2,000 chemical emissions. It also earned the more commonplace EPEAT Gold and Energy Star 4.0 ratings.

eBay Desktop Gives Bidders New Options

Swimming against the Web-2.0 trend of pushing desktop applications onto the Internet, on Tuesday eBay released the public version of eBay Desktop – a desktop version of what was previously only available on the Internet. The program is intended to streamline the eBay experience for power users.

Developed using Adobe’s AIR runtime environment, eBay Desktop adds a number of features unavailable with the basic eBay Web interface. Users can customize their views, organize related searches more easily, and view information updated in real time instead of refreshing pages. They can also view cached information when Internet access isn’t available.
