Yahoo Ditches Poison Pill Severance Plan

Struggling Internet giant Yahoo has settled a shareholder lawsuit by altering the terms of a so-called “poison pill” severance plan for its employees that itadopted shortly after Microsoft announced its unsolicited takeover offer back in early 2008.The severance package was designed to keep Yahoo employees with the company in the event of a merger by making it very expensive for a new owner to jettison them; it also would have made moving Yahooemployees to Microsoft’s Seattle-area headquarters difficult.

Under the settlement with its own shareholders, Yahoo’s severance terms won’t go into effect if Yahoo were just to sell its Internet search business—the one part of Yahoo Microsoft might still be interested in buying. The settlement also reduces the period of time employees would be eligible for severance pay in the event of an acquisition: the original terms had Yahoo employees eligible to collect severance if laid off within two years of a takeover; now, the period is just one year.

Survey Ranks U.S. Cities with Home Networks

A new market research study from MultiMedia Intelligence ranks U.S. cities on the basis of how wide their residents have adopted in-home networking during 2007. Perhaps not surprisingly, San Francisco topped the survey results, with some 28 percent of households having adopted home networking technologies. San Francisco was closely followed by Miami at 27 percent, and Los Angeles at 24 percent.

If you’re wondering why other well-known tech hubs didn’t even make the list, the survey apparently examined only top "designated marketing areas," a list of fourteen U.S. cities that omits places like Seattle and Austin as well as central cities like Denver, St. Louis, and Minneapolis.

T-Mobile Expanding 3G Network

T-Mobile Expanding 3G Network

Although it still hasn’t been officially announced, U.S. mobile operator T-Mobile is widely expected to introduce the first mobile phone build on Google’s Android platform next month, in the form of the HTC Dream. The potential problem with this scenario is that, while the Dream supports 3G data connectivity, T-Mobile is the number four mobile operator and only has 3G service up in a handful of markets. T-Mobile introduced 3G service in New York City in May and has since extended service to a handful of other markets, including Miami, Houston, Boston, San Diego, and Las Vegas.

Yahoo Refused Microsoft Last Year

A court case involving the Police & Fire Retirement System of the City of Detroit and the General Retirement System of the City of Detroit has brought some interesting documents to light – ones that could prove very embarrassing for Yahoo boss Jerry Yang.

It appears that as early as January 2007 he and the Yahoo board turned down an offer from Microsoft, this one of a hefty $40 per share, and the documents would seem to show that Yang was eager to quash any possible deal.

Shareholders Sue Yahoo Over Microsoft Offer

Shareholders Sue Yahoo Over Microsoft Offer

In a routine filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Yahoo has revealed that it is now facing seven lawsuits brought by groups of shareholders over its rejection of Microsoft’s recent $31-per-share takeover offer. The suits allege Yahoo’s board has breached its fiduciary duty to investors by rejecting Microsoft’s unsolicited buyout offer; Yahoo rejected the offer on February 11, saying it significantly undervalued the company. At the time it was made, Microsoft’s bid was worth $44.6 billion.

PSP Catches Fire

PSP Catches FireThere have been several incidents of lithium-iron batteries catching fire, but they’ve mostly affected laptops. On Wednesday, however, 12-year-old Henry Clay from Detroit found that hisSony PSP burst into flames in his pants pocket, Vnunet reports.   On Click OnDetroit, the boy’s mother, Sheila Clay, explained,   "He said it wasn’t a gradual heat. It really started heating up. He’s always been taught burn – fire – smoke, you drop and youroll. So, he dropped and rolled."   The handheld wasn’t on, as it was nine a.m. and the boy was in class. A teacher was able to remove the PSP from his pocket, and as a result Claywas treated for second-degree burns to his leg. In a slightly ironic touch, the Burn Out game was in the handheld at the time.   Sony has had battery fire problems with its notebooks before, butnot a PSP. If this turns out to be the tip of the iceberg, it could seriously hurt its position against other devices like the Nintendo DS.
