Phone maker Sony-Ericsson has been struggling in recent quarters, as its Sony-branded Walkman phones have failed to light up international markets and the company’s high-end handsets are increasingly being eclipsed by smartphones from a variety of other makers. Couple that with a general downturn in the mobile market and Sony Ericsson has seen its market share dip below 5 percent, leading to speculation the company might be split up and sold off in pieces or rolled back into its corporate parents.

Sony Ericsson Posts $384 Mln Loss, Plans to Cut 2,000 Jobs
Phone maker Sony Ericsson has announced its fiscal results for the first quarter of 2009…and the numbers aren’t pretty. The company reported a loss of €293 million during the quarter (that’s about $384 million USD), and to help cut costs and improve its bottom line the company plans to eliminate another 2,000 positions.
"As expected, the first quarter of this year has been extremely challenging for Sony Ericsson due to continued weak global demand," said Sony Ericsson president Dick Komiyama, in a statement. "We are aligning our business to the new market reality with the aim of bringing the company back to profitability as quickly as possible."
As Sony Ericsson Braces For Bad Figures, North American Head Leaves
It’s not a good time for Sony Ericsson at the moment. There are rumors that Ericsson might want out of the joint venture into handsets, no carrier is interested in its smartphone, and it’s anticipating a huge loss next quarter as handset demand drops. And now the head of its North American operations, Najmi Jarwala, is leaving the company at the end of this month. Executive VP Anders Runevad will replace him on an interim basis.
In a statement, Dick Komiyama, president of Sony Ericsson, said:
Sony Ericsson Profits Tumble
The second quarter of this year hasn’t been kind of mobile handset maker Sony Ericsson. Its published figures have shown profits fall by 29%, income by a disastrous 98%, and operating income by an almost unbelievable 101%.
Although it has an 8% market share, the company blames the awful period on a shrinking market and increased competition among high-end handsets, and says it’s planning to cut 2,000 jobs in an attempt to trim almost half a billion dollars from its costs. It also expects to issue bleak news for the rest of 2008.
