Samsung Takes on Flip with HMX-U10 Compact Camcorder

It’s not secret that a portion of the YouTube generation has fallen in love with easy-to-use, Internet-savvy camcorders like the Flip HD that make it easy to shoot video and quickly pop it up onto social networking sites. Now Samsung has decided to get in on the act with the HMX-U10 full HD compact camcorder, designed with the point-and-shoot consumer in mind. the U10 can shoot full HD video at 1,920 by 1,080 resolution as well as shoot 10 megapixel still images, and a built-in Intelli-Studio application enables basic video editing and one-touch uploads to YouTube.

Patent Promises Personal TV Censor

A new patent granted to Matthew Jarman of Salt Lake City purports to offer personal TV censorship capabilities, enabling users to block out offensive words or terms used in video programming or, if the particular program proves unmutable, in some cases blocking an entire program based on its content. Even better, these preferences would be configurable on a user-by-user basis, so children wouldn’t have to hear expletives and explicit terms on television, and parents wouldn’t have to hear words like “Barney” or “Britney Spears.”

TiVo And Comcast Sign Deal

“The companies said the deal will make TiVo’s service widely available to Comcast  customers in the majority of the cable company’s U.S. markets. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

In addition, the pair plan to co-develop a version of the TiVo service for Comcast’s current primary digital video recording platform. This calls for TiVo to develop software for incorporation in Comcast’s existing network platforms.”

You can expect the new service to be available towards Q3 in 2006.

The study forecasts that consumer DVD recorders are likely to see significant consumer take-up beginning this year as the market responds to more integration of supplementary features, such as storage and digital video recording, facilitated by an internal hard-disk drive (HDD).

This year, the proportion of DVD recorders with integrated HDDs is expected to exceed 65% of units shipped in Japan and 50% of those shipped in the US in 2005, with Western Europe hitting the same level by 2007.

Apex Announces Final Specs For ApeXtreme

Apex Digital Inc. has finalized the specifications of its revolutionary ApeXtreme (pronounced Apex Extreme) PC game console/DVD player/Digital Video Recorder, it was announced by Apex’s Steve Brothers. At the heart of the system will be AMD’s AthlonXP2000+processor chip; video will be supplied by NVIDIA’s nForce2 IGP graphics processor; all of which will be integrated on a motherboard produced by Biostar. The ApeXtreme will also utilize NVIDIA’s GeForce4 MX graphics card to supply smooth, crisp graphics. Additionally, the company has added DIgital Video Recording (DVR) functionality to the device since it was originally unveiled at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) where it was honored as the “Best of CES” in the “Home Audio & Video” category, as well as being a CES Innovations Design and Engineering Showcase Honoree.

New Hard Drives To Expand DVR Capacity

That’s why new external hard drives that are being designed to expand the capacity of cable or satellite industry digital video recorders will likely have to subscribe to the same copy protection standards dictated by Hollywood.

Maxtor Corp., the world’s second largest hard-drive maker, announced a new 160-gigabyte external drive this week that will be built as an expansion for cable or satellite set-top boxes.

Seagate Technology, the world’s No. 1 hard-drive maker, plans to announce next week a similar offering aimed at capitalizing on the growth of DVRs, now quickly gaining steam as the cable industry embarks on introducing DVR-equipped boxes to its massive customer base.

Sony PSX Pricing, Specs Announced

Sony set to unveil PSX this week

The device is a PlayStation 2 at heart, but adds a TV tuner, DVD recorder and80gb hard disc drive into the bundle as well – enabling digital video recording and music playback on the system, which is packaged attractively in a silver casing.

PSX has been described as Sony’s “stealth console”, an effort to get the PlayStation hardware into the living rooms of people who would be unlikely to welcome a dedicated console under their television.
