Sprint Gets Eco-Friendly with Samsung Reclaim Phone

Sprint Gets Eco-Friendly with Samsung Reclaim Phone

Sprint is eager to let consumers express their eco-friendliness by buying a new phone…in the form of the Samsung Reclaim, a QWERTY-equipped handset made from 80 percent recyclable materials and featuring a case that’s 40 percent bio-plastic made from corn. And, every purchase of a Samsung Reclaim sends $2 to the Nature Conservancy’s Adopt an Acre program in support of land conservation.

“Sprint is widely recognized as a leader among telecommunications companies in environmentally-responsible initiatives, and today we are proud to announce an even stronger commitment to sustainability with new eco-friendly products and programs,” said Sprint CEO Dan Hesse, in a statement.

Facebook Gets A Browser

Facebook Gets A Browser

They’re calling it Facebook Connect, and it might well be the first stage in turning the social networking site into a Web portal. For the moment the number of sites Facebook users can access with their login information is limited to news site Digg, video site Hulu and the Discovery Channel, the BBC reports, but that will certainly grow.

Users can also see what their friends have been doing on those other sites.

But Facebook is trailing the pack in this, as MySpace already has a similar system in place. For users it gives them a chance to join up with friends to, say, watch a video on Hulu together and discuss it in real time.

Discovery Buys HowStuffWorks

Discovery Communications, the parent of the Discovery TV channel, has bought howstuffworks.com, the web site that explains, well, how stuff works.

Although no figures were quoted, the Wall Street Journal claimed the deal was worth $250 million.

The howstuffworks site, based in Atlanta, debuted in 1998 and has won a number of awards, including Time magazine’s “25 Websites We Can’t Live Without” in 2006. It has 11 million unique visitors a month.

In many ways, it’s a good fit for a non-fiction TV channel, and the plan is for the site to continue, adding clips from the Discovery Channel to create a kind of “video Wikipedia.”

blinkx Adds Discovery Networks Programming

Video search engine blinkx, on a tear lately as it indexes more video content, added a big notch in its belt this week as it was announced they would be adding Discovery Networks programming within their search tool. No specific financial terms of the deal, if any, were announced.

These latest video search indexes, said blinkx, cover programming from Discovery’s various networks, including Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, Discovery Health Channel, Discovery Kids Channel, The Science Channel, Discovery Times Channel, the Military Channel, Discovery Home, FitTV, Discovery En Espanol and Discovery HD Theater. Blinx search works by using voice recognition technology to understand video word for word. Users can reportedly search for exactly what they are looking for to the exact word within a video clip.
