Dish Network Hits 1080p

Dish Network has always been proud of the swath of high-definition programming it offers its customers, but now the satellite service is upping the ante one more notch in its battle with cable, broadcast, and Internet-based video services by announcing it’s the “first in the industry” to offer high definition programming at 1080p resolution.

1080p high definition programming is part of Dish Network’s new TurboHD bundle, a collection of all-high-definition programming packages. Dish Network will also be launching 17 new high definition channels, bringing the total number of HD channels available on the service to 114. The company plans to expand the lineup to 150 HD channels by the end of 2008—aided by the recent successful launch of the company’s Echo XI satellite.

AT&T and Dish Network Parting Ways in 2009

AT&T and Dish Network have had a deal since mid-23003 to sell a “triple-play” package of satellite television, telephone, and Internet service in a combined offering. However, the company has informed Dish Network that, as of the end of it year, it is terminating their agreement to sell satellite TV service offerings along with phone and Internet service. The news came in the form of a six-month notice that AT&T won’t renew the deal.

The Dish Network/AT&T triple play packages have been particularly effective in regions without widespread broadband or cable television penetration. When AT&T acquired BellSouth in 2006, it expanded its partnership with Dish into those service areas; BellSouth had just dropped a similar bundling deal with Dish Network competitor DirecTV.

Game On with Dish Network

Maybe everything old is new again. Satellite TV provider Dish Network is expanding its interactive TV offering with DishGAMES, a new application available via its “DishHOME” interactive channel number 100.

“These new offerings are a great example of DISH Network’s ability to enhance DISH Network’s viewers’ set top boxes with the latest iTV technology,” said Scott Higgins, DISH’s director of Interactive TV Programming. “DISH Network continues to offer the most interactive TV content over any other pay-TV provider for the enjoyment of its over 11 million interactive households.”
