AMD Gets First DisplayPort Certification

AMD Gets First DisplayPort Certification

AMD has announced that the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has granted a series of ATI chipsets the first official DisplayPort certifications. VESA has granted the certifications to ATI’s Radeon HD 3400, Radeon 3600, Radeon HD 3800, ATI FireMV 2260 graphics boards, and AMD’s 780G integrated graphic chipset.

"This certification gives PC consumers next-generation display capabilities today," said VP of marketing for AMD’s graphics products group Matt Skynner, in a statement.

"Dell is pleased to see AMD achieve the first DisplayPort Certification for PC graphics," said Dell CTO Bruce Montag, in a release. "The VESA DisplayPort Certified Logo assures customers that DisplayPort products interoperate and provide a great digital display experience."

Dell Announces Giant 30-inch Monitor

At CES, Dell has announced the introduction of its new UltraSharp(TM) 3008WFP 30-inch widescreen flat panel monitor withDisplayPort. With a TrueColor WQXGA display with 2560 x 1600 resolution, it’s massive, but with a price tag to match – $1,999.   According to Dell, the monitor will integrate DisplayPorttechnology, uses a new digital interface standard that includes a USB-sized connector, and doubles the scalable performance of DVI with a unique architecture that enables new features.  "We’re offering customers the best high-definition viewing experience with the most advanced connectivity available," said Steve Gluskoter, director of Dell’s displays marketing."We’re excited to bring DisplayPort to customers and to the industry. The 3008WFP with DisplayPort technology will take the digital viewing experience to a whole new level."

The monitor boasts  WQXGA 2560 x 1600 resolution, an advanced video processor for multi-resolution viewing, TrueColor Technology with 100 percent color gamut, an 8ms response time, high 3000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, extensive connectivity with DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI-D with HDCP, VGA, S-Video, Component and Composite connectors, a 9-in-2 media card reader that enables easy access to download photos or files and four high-speed USB 2.0 ports that expand usability.

AMD Demos DisplayPort 1.1 Support

DisplayPort is a recent video output standard developed with an eye towards replacing DVI—and perhaps even doing away with that ubiquitous VGA connector once and for all. It uses a small USB-sized connector, offers 10.8 Mbps performance which is even faster than dual-link DVI, and is intended to be easy for manufacturers to implement on everything from televisions and computers to notebooks and portable devices.

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) approved the DisplayPort 1.1 specification last April; today at the VESA PlugTest in Milpitas, California, chipmaker AMD—which acquired graphics developer ATI a year ago—demonstrated its first graphics processors with native DisplayPort 1.1 support.

In-Stat: HDMI Looking Up, DVI To Decline

In a new market forecast, research firm In-Stat finds that the market for HDMI-eqiupped gear (like televisions, gaming consoles, movie players, PCs, media centers, and other consumer video products) will expand by 78 percent per year through 2010, while the now-common DVI connector—mostly found in computers and computer peripherals—will start to decline in the marketplace beginning in 2007.
