Although not everybody with an iPhone wants to jailbreak the device and explore the wild and wooly world of iPhone applications not sanctioned by Applem, the Cupertino company is apparently taking a dim view of developers who want to create programs and applications and distribute them in some way besides the officially sanction iTunes App Store. The latest version of the iPhone software development kit (SDK) forbids developers from distributing their programs in any way except via ad hoc distribution of via the App Store—which, of course, famously only offers programs that have met Apple’s still-unstated criteria for distribution.

RIAA File Sharing Verdict Thrown Out
Last year, the Recording Industry Association of America won a jaw-dropping legal victory when a federal jury ruled against plaintiff Jammie Thomas and awarded the RIAA $220,000 for making 24 songs (and, allegedly, thousands of others) available via the file-sharing service Kazaa. Now, the RIAA might be singing a different song: U.S. District Judge Michael Davis has declared a mistrial in the case, saying he committed a "manifest error of law" by instructing the jury that Thomas could be found guilty without any proof of actual distribution of copyrighted material.

Kyocera To Exit The Camera Business
Operations in the U.S. have already been closed and distribution has been transferred to Tocad, an American distributor. Kyocera bought Yashica in 1996 and acquired the Contax-brand name as part of the deal.
Despite this announcement, rumours are still circulating of two new launches for Contax’ medium format ranges. A Mark II 645 camera and a digital rangefinder to join the G series have been predicted, but could not be confirm whether these products are still on the design board.

Universal Music Group Tries Digital Release
“This is a great benefit to small acts that will can receive greater online distribution than independent record labels usually provide by releasing music for these artists through digital only services such as Apple’s iTunes, RealNetworks’ Rhapsody and Microsoft’s MSN Music. If digital sales are substantial (at least 5,000 copies), Universal has the option to release the song or album in CD form and begin retail distribution.”
While this may sound like a good thing for new artists, it looks like Universal Music is trying an inexpensive way to “test” a band before they spend real time and money on them. You be the judge.
