AOL Spammer Gets Seven Years

AOL Spammer Gets Seven Years

Michael Dolan and five accomplices pounded untold hundreds of thousands of AOL users with fraudulent messages and phishing scams for between 2002 and 2006, pulling in more than $400,000 from at least 250 victims. Now, the 24-year-old Connecticut man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for his actions, along with three years of supervised release.

Dolan plead guilty to running the phishing scheme nearly a year ago. According to prosecutors, Dolan and his accomplices managed to infect thousands of AOL users’ systems with fake greeting-card malware that prevented them from logging into AOL unless they entered credit card and bank account info, along with other personal information. Dolan and his pals also spammed AOL users with notices claiming to be from AOL’s billing department, claiming that users needed to re-send their credit card and billing information.

Cablevision Begins to Shut Down Voom

“The Cablevision board of directors agreed Thursday night to end chairman Charles Dolan’s titanic struggle to rescue the Voom nationwide satellite TV service.

The shutdown has begun and Voom service will halt April 30, the company said this morning in a regulatory filing.

The 15-member board, including Dolan, voted unanimously to adopt the timetable to shut the service, whose uncertain fate had torn the board and Dolan’s family, including his chief executive son James, who opposed Voom against his father’s wishes.”

VOOM Gets Large Investment

“Everyone who follows the VOOM story knows that Cablevision chairman Charles Dolan looks at the HDTV satellite service as his own pet project. Now Dolan reportedly is really putting his money where his mouth is. Dolan told FCC officials that he will make a $400,000,000 personal commitment to save the struggling satellite provider and Cablevision has plans to raise even more money to keep the project afloat. The catch is that Dolan wants the FCC to nix the deal that would have sold VOOM’s satellites to Dish Network.”

VOOM Hangs On By A Thread

The two parties will work cooperatively to finalize the separation from Cablevision of its Rainbow DBS operation. The agreement allows Rainbow DBS to remain in operation and to continue to provide its VOOM service to subscribers while Charles and Thomas Dolan seek to arrange an alternate transaction that would avoid a shutdown of Rainbow DBS. Charles Dolan has agreed to fund any costs incurred by Rainbow DBS above those that would have been incurred under a shutdown scenario. The agreement, which was approved by the Board of Directors of Cablevision at a board meeting today and by a special committee of independent directors, terminates on March 31, 2005.
