Laptop Review: Sony VAIO VGN-A197XP

“Sony’s VAIO A series is the company’s flagship multimedia laptop. It’s also Sony’s first to come equipped with a 17in. widescreen display. As expected with any Sony product, the VAIO VGN-A197XP is visually distinctive and comes with a premium asking price. Based on Intel’s brand-new Dothan Pentium M processor, 1GB of DDR SDRAM, ATI’s top-end Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics chipset and both built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the VAIO VGN-A197XP pretty much has it all. If you’re looking to make a professional statement about yourself and your company, the VAIO VGN-A197XP is just the ticket. If value and performance are more important, you can better this offering for almost half the price. Having said that, you’ll not find a TFT screen as good as this one.”

Dell Upgrades XPS Laptops With Radeon 9800

Dell’s Inspiron 700m offers the company’s first 12.1-inch Wide-Screen display on a notebook and includes the power and portability prized by consumers who want a unique viewing experience on the smallest chassis in the Inspiron family of notebooks.

Offered for the first time on a Dell notebook is the 700m’s crystal clear LCD screen which has a smooth finish and provides rich and vibrant colors with sharp and crisp images. Users will find this screen’s output resolution different from traditional LCD screens, similar to the difference between a glossy photo versus a matte finish. Coupled with the Wide-Screen format, the two-spindle 700m delivers impressive DVD viewing and allows for additional screen area to increase productivity. Included with each 700m notebook, customers will receive an LCD care kit to help safely clean, protect and preserve the screen from dust, dirt and fingerprints accumulated with everyday use.

Intel Pushes ‘Centrino 2′ Launch To 2005

According to eWeek:

“The issue concerns the “Alviso” chip set, part of the Sonoma platform, which comprises the currently-shipping Pentium M processor, code-name Dothan; the Alviso chip set; and its latest wireless module. Sources said Intel will book the Alviso for revenue this year, and push the bulk of its shipments until early 2005. Intel will also launch the platform in early 2005.

Intel began contacting its customers on Friday about the glitch, whose nature was not described. The “silicon did not meet Intel’s standards for quality,” one source said.”

Intel Launches Lower Cost Centrino Lineup

From Intel’s press release:

The new chips round out the Intel Pentium M processor line, which also includes the recently introduced Pentium M processors 735, 745 and 755. The Pentium M processor is a key component of Intel Centrino mobile technology – Intel’s best technology for mobile computing. From full-size to ultra-portable notebook PCs, Intel Centrino mobile technology delivers outstanding mobile performance and integrated wireless LAN capability, with energy saving technologies to help extend system battery life in a choice of sleek form factors.

Intel ‘Dothan’ Notebooks Begin Shipping

Available in speeds up to 2 GHz, the new Dothan processors were supposed to have been shipped last year. In January, however, Intel ran into a manufacturing glitch with the new chips, and company executives said they wouldn’t ship until the second quarter.

Intel will launch the new chips in San Francisco this morning, and reduced prices on its other offerings over the weekend.

Dothan will use Intel’s latest 90-nm process, a shrink of the 130-nm technology used to manufacture the “Banias” processor that made up the first generation of the Pentium M. On the other hand, Intel filled out the Dothan with a larger 2-Mbyte Level-2 cache, which means that the die size of the Banias and Dothan will be about the same.

Fujitsu Updates LifeBook With New Pentium M

From Fujitsu’s press release:

Fujitsu Computer Systems Corporation today unveiled its latest thin-and-light LifeBook S7000 notebook, featuring the next-generation Intel Pentium M Processor – a key component of Intel Centrino mobile technology. The new chip features a faster clock speed, design enhancements and more on-die cache memory for better performance.

“The award-winning LifeBook S Series notebook has become a flagship product for Fujitsu because of its innovative and elegant design,” said Paul Moore, director of product marketing for Fujitsu Computer Systems. “It seems only fitting to equip one of the most innovative notebooks on the market with the latest mobile technology.”

Intel Delays New Mobile Processor Release

While Intel said the delay would not have a significant impact on first-quarter revenue, the issue represents a rare technological slip for the Santa Clara, California-based microchip leader.

The chip, which Intel has given the codename Dothan and is produced using Intel’s most advanced manufacturing equipment, is now expected to be available in the second quarter, which runs between April and June, Intel said.

“We were disappointed that we did not begin shipping Dothan as planned,” Intel President Paul Otellini said during a conference call to discuss Intel’s fourth-quarter earnings.

Intel Centrino 2 to offer 533MHz FSB

Quote from the article at The Register:

Announced in September at Intel Developer Forum, Sonoma comprises a second-generation Wi-Fi adaptor, Calexico 2; the ‘Alviso’ chipset; and ‘Dothan’, the 90nm, 2MB L2 version of the Pentium M. Intel said the platform will debut in the second half of 2004.

With Dothan due to ship late 2003/early 2004, that timeframe was taken as shorthand for Q3. But according to roadmap information relayed to Xbit Labs, Sonoma will not appear before Q4 2004. “
