The Most Popular Illegal Downloads

The Most Popular Illegal Downloads

So what are the most popular TV shows and movies among those who download illegally? It might not be a question many of us consider, but research company Big Champagne has. It checked the torrents – the places where people download illegally – to find out.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Heroes is the winner, with around 55 million people downloading it this year, followed by Lost, with 51 million illegal downloads. They also discovered some interesting statistics – that there’s been an increase in the illegal download of films and TV shows compared to music, and that visits to torrent sites have almost doubled in the last 12 months, the BBC reports.

British Company Offers New Way Of Downloading Games

British Company Offers New Way Of Downloading Games

Because of their sheer size, downloading games isn’t a major part of the download market. It can take hours to download an entire game, which you need to do before you can begin playing.

But that is likely to change, thanks to an innovation by a British company, Awomo.

"What Awomo does is take the core files used to play the game, which is enough to get you up and running, and then download the rest of the content in the background," Awomo boss Roger Walkden to the BBC.

Nine Inch Nails Downloads A Hit

Can free music work? It certainly has for Trent Reznor, the man behind Nine Inch Nails. He offered his new album, Ghosts I-IV, in a number of configurations ranging from free to a $300 ultra-deluxe, autographed, limited edition – and all 2,500 copies of that sold out in just three days, crashing his site’s servers, and bring him in $750,000, according to Information Week.   Reznor had 36 tracks in total. Fans could download the first nine for free, with other packages including a $5 download, a $10 download including physical CDs, along with other packages.   There was also the option of purchasing a license allowing the user to copy and distribute the album.   Last year Radiohead famously let fans download its latest album, In Rainbows, and pay what they believed it was worth. No definitive figures have been given on how many downloads were made or how much people paid, but comScore reckoned it achieved an average of $6 per download, with 63% of people not paying at all. The download version was discontinued when sales of the physical CD began.   Artists in other genres have offered albums for free download, too, such as classical violinist Tasmin Little.

Leopard: Apple Embraces Windows and Gaming

One of the things Apple does vastly better than Microsoft is move their users between operating system versions. With the one exception of a massive installed base bath they took when they moved to OSX, losing about half of their market at the turn of the century (these were folks that probably weren’t buying product anyway), Apple has been well ahead of Microsoft in terms of installed base migrations.

Burn Your Video With Real

Real Networks is upping the download ante. It’s just released a new version of its trademark free RealPlayer that will allow users to download video and burn it to CDs and DVDs. The beta is coming this month to the company’s web site. Users will be able to download video that doesn’t have digital rights management (DRM) protection. All you’ll need to do is click the “download this video” button as you watch the video, and several videos can be downloaded simultaneously. Once the download is complete, the videos can be burned to CD. Users owning RealPlayer Plus can burn to DVD. Users can also share video links.   The initial version is set to work with Windows, both Internet Explorer and Firefox. However, a Mac version is slated for later this year. The player will support  Real, Windows Media, Flash, and QuickTime downloads and Real, Windows and QuickTime streaming. Flash streaming support is also in the works, as is the ability to enable transfer of downloads to portable devices.   “The new RealPlayer gives consumers more control of Internet video than was ever possible before,” said Rob Glaser, chairman and CEO of Real.”The new RealPlayer is a major step towards realizing our vision of bringing great digital entertainment to more people on more screens around the world.”   According to the company, more than 1.5 million copies of its RealPlayer are downloaded every day.

iTunes Adds Lionsgate Movies

Apple has announced that films from Lionsgate are available for purchase and download today from Apple’s iTunes store, with more Lionsgate titles on the way in coming weeks. iTunes launched a video download service with films from the Disney catalog available for purchase; so far, only Paramount has added material to the iTunes lineup, experimenting with offering a small selection of titles for purchase and download. Adding the Lionsgate library to iTunes not online increases iTunes’ clout in the video download marketplace, but also offers some popular titles to Apple’s download service.
