Nintendo DSi to Launch in U.S. on April 5

The handheld gaming system that American gamers have drooled over for months while it made the rounds in Japan is finally making its way across the Pacific. Nintendo announced on Wednesday that the DSi handheld will launch in the United States on April 5.

As the third generation of the Nintendo DS, the DSi sports a number of improvements, including a case that’s slimmer than the previous DS Lite, larger screens, better speakers, and two digital cameras: one pointing toward the user and one pointing away. It will also come with Nintendo DSiWare preinstalled, an application that allows gamers to download software directly to their portable devices from an online store, similar to the way the Wii already works.

UK Fake Nintendo DS Warning

UK Fake Nintendo DS Warning

‘Tis the season to be wary of counterfeit items. In the UK, Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has issued a warning after seizing hundreds of fake Nintendo DS and DS Lite consoles with dangerous power adapters.

A number of people had ordered the products after being attracted by the price, around $60 rather than the normal $150. Nintendo has said it did not produce the adapters.

HMRC warned that people should only buy from reputable websites, and HMRC spokesperson Clare Merrills told the BBC that faulty counterfeit consoles might pose safety problems:

Nintendo DS to Add Music and Camera?

Nintendo DS to Add Music and Camera?

Nintendo’s DS handheld gaming system has proven wildly popular, consistently outselling competition like the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) and reaching out new markets with titles that appeal to kids as well as adult casual gamers and even seniors. And while the system is projected to sell as many as 28 million units this year, that would still be a decline from the 30 million units Nintendo sold during its previous fiscal year. And the basic system has been on the market almost four years, although Nintendo has been doling out new variants and colors.

Unsafe Equipment Chargers Hit U.K.

We use chargers all the time for portable games consoles, to charge up mobile phone, MP3 players – so much of our daily gear needs to be plugged in and recharged regularly. We do it without thought. But in Britain, Trading Standards has issued a warning about cheap Chinese chargers on sale in markets and online that are dangerous and could cause electrocution of fires.

Some of the chargers have the code DE62347066, according to the BBC, which revealed the story. Others carry no code but are sold under the name Travel Charger.

Nintendo Announces Red-and-Black DS Lite

Nintendo might be garnering all sorts of attention for the success of its Wii console, but lets not forget it has another best-selling system on its hands in the form of the Nintendo DS handheld gaming system. Now, the company is hoping to expand the system’s appeal to non-traditional gamers by offering a new fashion-friendly crimson-and-black edition of the Nintendo DS Lite, bundled with the latest installment of its mental gymnastics game, Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day.

North America Gets Nintendo DS Browser

Although it’s been available in Japan since the middle of last year, U.S. fans of the Wi-Fi enabled Nintendo DS handheld gaming system may be thrilled to learn that the Nintendo DS Browser is now available in the North American market. Based on the Opera Web browser uses the DS’s dual screen design to offer a Web browsing experience with more features—and more real estate—than you’ll find on a typical cell phone, and the Nintendo DS Browser features include an onscreen keyboard and handwriting recognition which can be used with the DS’s stylus.

Nintendo DS Becomes American Obsession

Swallow this amazing fact if you can: there are close to nine Nintendo DS or DS Lite portable game systems sold every 60 seconds. Sure, this number may seem small when compared to other addictive products like cigarettes, alcohol, video poker, or Paris Hilton, but this is a gaming system we are talking about.

"More than 5 million people joined the ranks as Nintendo DS owners in America last year alone," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "And right now, they’re all saying the same thing — ‘give me more!’ Fortunately, no matter your taste or experience in gaming, that’s exactly what we’re supplying in the months to come."

Nintendo Recalls Wii Straps, DS Adapters

Responding to complaints from consumers who have damaged televisions and other personal property when the motion-sensing remote on their new Wii video game console flew across the room and, well, broke something, Nintendo has announced it will voluntarily exchange some 3.2 million wrist straps shipped with its Wii video game console systems.

To the delight of school teachers everywhere—we’re sure—Nintendo has announced it will introduce Nintendo DS Lite handheld gaming systems in two new colors—Onyx and Coral Pink—on September 13, 2006.

“Not only are the DS Lite screen and battery life incredible, but the new colors just add another element of fun, allowing people to personalize who they are by the color, or colors they pick,” said George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications, in a statement.
