Nintendo took the wraps off its latest and greatest handheld gaming platform, the Nintendo DSi, back in October of 2008, but it wasn’t until April 5th that the system officially went on sale in North America (following launches in Japan and Europe). The handheld gaming system that American gamers have drooled over for months while it made the rounds in Japan is finally making its way across the Pacific. Nintendo announced on Wednesday that the DSi handheld will launch in the United States on April 5.

As the third generation of the Nintendo DS, the DSi sports a number of improvements, including a case that’s slimmer than the previous DS Lite, larger screens, better speakers, and two digital cameras: one pointing toward the user and one pointing away. It will also come with Nintendo DSiWare preinstalled, an application that allows gamers to download software directly to their portable devices from an online store, similar to the way the Wii already works.

The new Nintendo DSi handheld gaming system (Japanese) is set to go on sale in Japan tomorrow for ¥18,900, adding on-board cameras and music capabilities to the popular gaming platform. The DSi will also support a “DSi Shop” that will sell applications, content, and games directly to DSi users via it’s integrated Wi-Fi connection.

Nintendo hadn’t announced any definite plans for offering the Nintendo DSi outside of Japan, save to note that they expected to bring the unit to other markets in 2009. Now, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata says the company plans to launch the DSi overseas by “summer 2009,” noting in a meeting with press and analysts that a n autumn or year-end launch of the device would be “too late.”
