iPod accessory maker iSkin has introduced new Vibes and Duo cases Apple’s latest second-generation iPod touch and fourth-generation iPod nano, bringing a dash of color and personalization—not to mention protection—to the devices.

For second-generation iPod touch owners, the iSkin touch Vibes offers a clear screen film, durable soft case, and a protective docking port insert. The cases feature an inner “shimmery” pattern, and are available in blue, red, black, purple, and clear versions for $29.99. Meanwhile, the iSkin touch Duo case comes with a clear-coated VISOR screen guard and uses a soft silicon case that sports built-in Microban antimicrobial protection to help keep your funky music collection from getting…well, funky. The duo cases are available in two-tone color combinations for $34.99.

SimpleTech Pushes External Drives to 3TBNotebook users looking for a little extra storage will find plenty with SimpleTech’s giant new Pro 1.5TB and Duo Pro 3TB external drives, announced on Monday. Both offer capacious internals, four different ways to connect, andMac-styled exteriors.

The single-drive Pro 1.5TB can be can connected with eSATA, Firewire 800, Firewire 400, or USB 2.0, giving it theoretical operating speeds of up to 3 gigabits per second when connected in an eSATA configuration. The larger Duo Pro 3TB drive doubles up on 1.5TB drives, giving it twice the storage, as well as RAID options. It can either be set to RAID 0 to write faster and make use of the whole 3TB, or RAID 1 for redundancy, ensuring all data is copied on both disks in case one fails.

Intel Fills in Details on MacBook Air Chip

The shrunken Core 2 Duo processor that Apple dropped into its iconic Air is now available for public consumption. Intel finally slipped out specs on the “Core 2 Duo S” at developer conference in San Francisco this week.

According to Electronista, the Duo S uses a 45-nanometer process to help it run cooler and more efficiently, producing a difference of about 3 watts saved under peak performance conditions. Intel also managed to shrink the processors down 60 percent from their ordinary Core 2 Duo brethren.

The Core 2 Duo train keeps on rolling: yesterday additional computer makers announced new notebook offerings based around Intel’s mobile edition of its Core 2 Duo processor, with Sony and Gateway all rolling out numerous models for the North American market. As with other company’s announcements, the systems tend to be comparatively straightforward CPU upgrades from existing Pentium M or Core Duo systems, rather than revolutionary leaps forward in either performance or features. But the industry is certainly promoting Core 2 Duo as the latest and greatest must-have technology…we’ll leave it to our Tender Readers to decide how true that might be.

The stars have aligned, the PR firms have stretched and flexed and assumed their stances at the starting line, and bang!—today the announcements of new Core 2 Duo-powered notebook and portable systems leave the gates in a mad dash for your wallets. These Core 2 Duo systems are, for the most part, Core Duo systems retrofitted with Intel’s newer Core 2 Duo technology—and in many cases virtually no other specs have changed from their earlier incarnations. And many are, for the moment, available only in Japan. But still—Core 2 Duo, right? Whoohoo!

Intel Formally Announces Core 2 Duo

Intel Corporation today formally announced the availability of its high-end Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors for both desktop and mobile systems. The specs and performance benchmarks of these chips have been detailed for months, making Intel’s formal product debut something of a non-news event: suffice to say, the new CPUs redefine desktop and mobile computing performance for the Intel platform and use less power than their predecessors. And, not to be forgotten, outperform offerings from rival AMD.

For desktops, processor speeds range from 1.86 GHz to 2.93 GHz, with CPU prices from $183 to $999 per unit

Intel Rechristens Processors Core 2 Duo

Chipmaker Intel today announced the official names for its upcoming Conroe and Merom processors: from this point forward, they’ll officially be known as Core 2 Duo processors, reflecting the chip’s new Core architecture and that each chip will sport two processing cores (or “brains”). A high-end version aimed at PC enthusiasts and gamers will be dubbed the Core 2 Extreme.
