Sony Debuts DVDirect DVD Recorder

From the press release:

Sony is unlocking new levels of home video enjoyment with the world’s first DVD burner capable of stand-alone, real-time DVD recording, as well as computer-attached burning.

Sony’s new DVDirect (pronounced DVD Direct) device can connect directly to a camcorder or VCR for transferring tape-based video footage to DVD for playback on most home DVD players and PC DVD-ROM drives.

Camcorder sales continue to soar, marking a significant opportunity for the DVDirect device to help camcorder owners transfer home movies onto DVD without the complexity of using a computer. This allows DVD recording to be extended to a broader group of consumers who might otherwise consider the task too daunting.

Philips First To Develop 16X Media

This allows consumers to use this single disc at all recording speeds – from real-time 1x video recording speed up to the maximum achievable 16x speeds. A 16x DVD drive writes the full 4.7 GB DVD+Rdisc in about 5 minutes. Mass volume shipments of this new 16x DVD+R medium will start in August.

The new 1x-16x DVD+R disc was co-developed by Philips Optical Storage and CMC of Taiwan, the world no. 1 manufacturer of recordable DVD media. The disc uses a new Oxonol dye developed by FujiFilm, containing no heavy metals/banned substances conform Philips’ strive to relieve the environment. The developments are based on the results of Philips Research’s innovations in optical-storage technologies, which include the development of a new write strategy for high-speed writing.

Memorex Announces 8X8 External DVD Recorder

The new drive, which comes with both USB 2.0 and IEEE 1394a FireWire interfaces, also writes to CD-R discs at 32X; rewrites DVD+RW discs at 4X, DVD-RW discs at 4X and CD-RW discs at 24X; and reads DVD-ROM at 12X and CD-ROM at 40X speeds. The Memorex True 8X External Dual Format DVD recorder is expected to be in stores this month for an estimated street price of US$229.99.

Sony drops PSX features to meet Xmas launch

The PSX, which is set to launch in Japan on December 13, features DVD playing and recording abilities, a hard drive video recorder, a PlayStation 2 console and a media centre for handling music, image and video files.

However, the company has now admitted that some of the functionality which was claimed for the device at its unveiling on October 7th will now not appear, due to a rushed production schedule to launch the device for Christmas.
