The Most Complete Topographic Map Of The World

The Most Complete Topographic Map Of The World

It is, they claim, the most complete topographic map of Earth ever made. With detailed measurements taken by NASA’s Terra spacecraft, the new map just published by NASA and the Japanese government covers 99% of the Earth’s surface – although the poles have been left off.

The map was created by processing or correlating 1.3 million stereo-pair images snapped that had been taken by the Japanese Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emissions and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on board Terra. After that natural color was simulated on the data before it was superimposed over terrain models to give the final image.
The data is free for anyone to download

Samsung Blue Earth Phone Powered by the Sun

Samsung Blue Earth Phone Powered by the Sun

In the run up to the Mobile World Congress 2009, Samsung has officially announced Blue Earth, a new all-touchscreen smartphone powered by sunlight. The front of the phone is one giant touchscreen interface, while the back boasts a solar panel which the company claims can generate enough electricity to keep the phone charged and ready to go. And Samsung’s environmentally-conscious efforts don’t stop there: the phone is made from recycled plastics from water bottles, and is free of toxic substances like phthalates, beryllium, and brominated flame retardants. The phone’s packaging will be made from recycled paper products and the phone’s charger—yes, it’ll come with a charger—consumes just 0.03 watts on standby

Google Earth Rebuilds Ancient Rome

Google Earth Rebuilds Ancient Rome

The glory that was Rome lives again in 3D splendor in Google Earth. The popular service has reconstructed the most famous city of the ancient world, giving visitors a chance to zoom around 6,700 buildings and more than 250 place marks. The 200 buildings already well known to scholars have been rendered as faithfully as possibly.

Google teamed with Virginia University and Past Perfect Productions on the venture, and the 3D models are based on a model of the city known as the Plastico di Roma Antica, which stands in Rome’s Museum of Roman Civilization, according to the BBC.

Is It Interstellar Spam?

Is It Interstellar Spam?

Yesterday 501 images and text messages were beamed out from a radio telescope in the Ukraine to a planet 20 light years away.

The material, collectively called A Message From Earth, had been put together from a competition by social networking site Bebo covering what people would like aliens to receive. Among the articles are pieces on a first kiss and world peace, the BBC reports.

Now in binary format, they’re currently traversing the 120 trillion miles between Earth and the planet Gliese 581C, which scientists believe could support life, where they should arrive in 2029.

Google Accused Of Privacy "Hypocrisy"

Google Accused Of Privacy "Hypocrisy"

What is Google’s stance on privacy? That’s the question being asked, at least by Ken Boehm of the National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC) after The Smoking Gun website reveal court papers filed by the search giant in a privacy suit over its Street Views mapping tool. In its filing Google asserts that “complete privacy doesn’t exist.”

But, says NLPC’s Boehm, Google had responded to a politician by saying it “takes privacy very seriously,” according to the BBC. He continued:

"Perhaps in Google’s world privacy does not exist, but in the real world individual privacy is fundamentally important and is being chipped away bit by bit every day by companies like Google."

Google Earth 4.3 Adds Buildings, Better Nav

If Google Earth’s cumbersome 3D navigation system made you feel more like you were designing L-brackets in AutoCAD than soaring over the mountaintops as a bird, the latest revision of the software may just fix that problem. Google released version 4.3 of Google Earth on Wednesday, with a host of updates including improved navigation, more buildings, and Street View.

To fix the somewhat clunky way of interacting with 3D maps, Google changed the interface to automatically look “up” as a user zooms closer to Earth, giving a view similar to parachuting down to Earth. Google also added a “look” joystick for browsing around without moving when close to the ground.

Customizing the Planet with Virtual Earth

Following in footsteps laid down by Google with Google Earth and Google SketchUp, Microsoft announced on Thursday that users of its Virtual Earth application now have the ability to add custom 3D objects to the landscape. The new Microsoft Earth -3DVIA is the result of a collaboration between Microsoft and Dassault Systems, a company that’s specializes in 3D designs and life-cycle management.

Google Earth Outreach Helps Nonprofits

Google Earth Outreach Helps NonprofitsIn a new venture, Google is using its Google Earth to help nonprofits. Called Google Earth Outreach, it will use Google Earth layers to allow the nonprofits to tell their stories. The program will provide the resources andsoftware the nonprofits need to implement the technology.   While most of us know Google Earth as something free, there’s also a Pro version (which costs $400) that has tools for buildingmaps and layers.   Google took its first steps in this direction back in April, when it showed a “Crisis in Darfur” layer that had been created by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The layer showed affected areas in the region, along with video and audio testimony of the crisis. Since then others have createdlayers, including the United Nations Environment Program.   “Our goal with Google Earth Outreach is to help public service organizations worldwideleverage our mapping technology to further their goals by providing tailored technical guidance and grants,” said John Hanke, director of Google Earth & Maps.   The Outreach site willhave video tutorials, case studies, and forums moderated by staff. Organizations will also be able to apply for grants for further technical support.   The site will also have a showcase of someof the most compelling new stories. Google says there have been 250 million downloads of Google Earth to date.

Microsoft’s Live Search Gets 3D City Models

Microsoft has taken the wraps of Virtual Earth 3D, an update to its online mapping service which now offers three-dimensional views and models of the real world. Further, Microsoft has integrated mapping options into its Live Search.

“The release of Virtual Earth 3D is a significant step toward creating a truly new dimension in search not only in the look and feel of the experience but in the way consumers and advertisers can be involved,” said Steve Berkowitz, senior VP of Microsoft’s Online Services Group. “Local search is one of the fastest-growing categories online today, and adding features like 3-D will only help move the category further ahead and help Windows Live attract more customers and advertisers.”
