Palm Appoints Jon Rubenstein to CEO Job

Palm Appoints Jon Rubenstein to CEO Job

Palm just rolled out its Palm pre smartphone on Sprint, in a high-profile move designed to put the company back at the forefront of the mobile technology industry and give the Apple iPhone a serious run for its money. Now, Palm is making another high-profile play, appointing former iPod developer Jon Rubenstein to the CEO position.

Rubenstein joined Palm from Apple in October 2007 as Executive Chairman; he’ll take over the reins from Ed Colligan on June 12. Colligan says he plans to take time off, then join Elevation Partners, a private equity firm that counts U2’s Bono as one of its high profile investors—and which, incidentally, has been one of Palm’s backers as the company tries to re-assert itself in the technology industry. Rubenstein joined Pal when Elevation put its first stake in the company.

First Mobile Service Using Geostationary Satellite

Asia Pacific Systems (AP Systems, President Jung Ki-ro) held a commencement ceremony for its geostationary satellite mobile service on April 6, in their office building at Gasan-dong, Seoul. The service is the first commercial service in Korea using a geosynchronous high earth orbit satellite.

An AP Systems’ satellite phone costs 924,000 won (US$701.30), and using 50 minutes in a month costs 80,000 won (US$60.50), which is the cheapest flat rate.

AP Systems predicts that it will earn 7.5 billion won (US$5.7 million) and collect 6,000 subscribers in Korea in its first year by providing distinguished service no matter where someone is.

Google Co-Founder Touts White Space Plan

Google co-founder Larry Page has gone to Washington in hopes of convincing members of Congress and officials at the Federal Communications Commission to allow a new class of unlicensed, low-power wireless devices that would operate in the "white space" between allotted bands in the spectrum space soon to be vacated by analog television broadcasts. Page argues the benefits of enabling low-power devices to operated in gaps between allocated frequency bands could be enormous, creating whole new classes of short-range, high-bandwidth devices that would support a myriad of online and media-intensive applications—like streaming high-definition video to wireless devices.

Students Slow to Embrace Campus Text Alerts

If there’s one thing generally true of students today, it’s that they’re glued to their cell phones. Whether talking with friends and family, sending and receiving messages, or checking their social networking profiles, today’s youth rarely do anything without a mobile phone close at hand. However, comparatively few students are embracing what would seem to be a welcome and important mobile service: campus safety warnings issued via text messages.

New York Times Nixing Online Subscriptions?

New York Times Nixing Online Subscriptions?

A report in the New York Post (of all places) says the New York Times plans to stop charging Internet users $8/month to access TimesSelect, an area of its Web site which features Op-Ed pieces, columnists, and other selected content. Citing a source who claimed to have been briefed on the decision, the timin of the changeover depends largely on the technical issues involved in managing TimesSelect and transitioning that content out of its current locked garden.

TimesSelect is accessible to both subscribers to the print edition of the paper, as well as Web-only subscribers. According to recent figures, the TimesSelect online service has about 220,000 paid subscribers.
