Apple Extends MobileMe Subscriptions Again

Apple’s MobileMe service aimed to be “Exchange for the rest of us,” and that’s proven to be far truer than the company hoped, as the service’s launch was plagued by lost mail and connectivity issues…you know, the same thing corporate and enterprise users and Microsoft’s Exchange service have been dealing with for years. The rocky launch already prompted Apple to add 30 days to subscriptions to the service, and now the company is adding another 60 days to trial and paid MobileMe subscriptions as an apology to customers.

Jobs: MobileMe Launched Too Soon

Jobs: MobileMe Launched Too Soon

In an internal message sent to employees, Apple CEO Steve Jobs discussed Apple’s recently-launched—and problem-plagued—MobileMe service, and admitted the company launched the service too soon, with the result that MobileMe didn’t meet Apple’s high standards.

“It was a mistake to launch MobileMe at the same time as iPhone 3G, iPhone 2.0 software, and the App Store,” Jobs wrote. “We all had more than enough to do, and MobileMe could have been delayed without consequence.”

HBO Brings a la Carte Programming to iTunes

If you’re too cheap to spring for a $160-a-month cable package, but still want to catch Tony Soprano knocking off a few guys now and then, HBO now offers a slightly more affordable way to access its programming: iTunes.  HBO and Apple jointly announced on Tuesday that many of the cable channel’s programs have arrived at the iTunes store for download.

Apple will initially offer six HBO series on iTunes, including The Sopranos, Deadwood, Rome, Sex and the City, Flight of the Conchords and The Wire. The former three series have episodes priced at $1.99 per episode, while the latter three cost $2.99 per episode. While full seasons are available, Apple won’t offer any discount for purchasing episodes in bulk.

Apple Now Top U.S. Music Retailer

New music sales figures for January and February of 2008 from market research firm NPD show that Apple has become the top music retailer in the United States, taking over the top slot from Wal-mart. According to NPD, some 19 percent of music sold in the United States during January and February of 2008 went to iTunes, while Wal-mart accounted for 15 percent of all domestic music sales. Best Buy took third place, with Amazon.com and Target tied for fourth place.

The news comes barely a month after NPD’s MusicWatch survey found that iTunes was the U.S.’s second largest music retailer for 2007. The new number one ranking applies to the first two months of 2008.

Apple Slices Prices on DRM-Free Tunes

Apple Slices Prices on DRM-Free Tunes

Weeks after Amazon directly challenged the iTunes store with an online music library comprised completely of DRM-free music, Apple seems to be feeling the heat and has reduced prices on its own DRM-free offerings. On Tuesday, Apple cut  the prices on its iTunes Plus catalog to 99 cents per song, down from $1.29.

According to Apple, the iTunes store will continue to build its collection of unprotected tracks. “We’re adding over two million tracks from key independent labels in addition to EMI’s digital catalog and look forward to even more labels and artists making their music available on iTunes Plus,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes, in a statement.

"We’d like to thank all of our customers who have contributed to this incredible milestone," said Eddy Cue, Apple’s VP of iTunes, in a release. iTunes Adds Complete My Album Feature

Recent figures on U.S. music sales tend to indicate the digital single is exerting a strong influence over the online music industry, as online music stores offer consumer the ability to cherry-pick albums and pay for only their favorite tracks, rather than buying the whole thing. Maybe albums are on the way out, but Apple’s iTunes has rolled out a new “Complete My Album” feature which enables consumers to purchase and entire albums’ worth of tracks without having to pay again for individual tracks they have already have purchased. iTunes will offer a 99 cent credit towards the purchase of an album for every track a customer has previously bought from that album.
