Intel has formally taken the wraps off its Centrino 2 mobile platform, offering intregrated Wi-Fi wireless networking, an option for discrete video controllers, and new HUGI—Hurry Up and Get Idle—technology designed to reduce processor power consumption (and even disable parts of the CPU) in order to extend battery life in notebooks and mobile devices. Centrino 2 technology also takes up far less space than its predecessors, opening the door for more manufacturers to produce super-thin notebook computers.

Sony Reveals This Year’s PlayStation Lineup
It’s that time of year again: Looking to drive hype for its PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable systems, Sony has lifted the veil on upcoming games for 2008 and early 2009, giving gamers a glimpse of what to expect in the year to come. The list of 15 titles includes some much-anticipated updates to existing franchises as well as some relative newcomers.
Crackdown Is A Winner
Crackdown, the X box 360 game that’s garnered high praise and big sales, has won the innovationprize and Develop Awards. It was one of three winners – Motorstorm, for the PS3, took away the best new franchise prize, while Sony had the Grand Prix award for overall excellence. Crackdown was designed by David Jones, who works forReal Time Worlds. He also helped in the creation of the classic Grand Theft Auto and Lemmings. Among other awards, Eden Games won for Test Drive Unlimited, which was given for best use of online, whilst Viva Piñata from Rare was given the prize for visual arts. The Development Legend crown went to Ian Hetherington, former manager of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and co-founder of game firm Psygnosis. Develop magazine canvassed 100 game industryexperts to choose the award recipients. “The fact that no one company dominated the awards this year shows what a diverse range of talent this industry boasts,” said MichaelFrench, editor of Develop Magazine. “It’s been a brilliant year for games, with new hardware allowing developers to really stretch their imagination with new ways to play – so competition forthese prestigious awards has been fiercer than ever.”
Carcaterra to Pen Atari’s Alone in the Dark
Video game publisher Atari announced today that it has struck a deal with best-selling novelist and screenwriter Lorenzo Carcaterra to write the script for the company’s forthcoming apolocyptic game title Alone in the Dark.
Alone in the Dark is a long-standing, zombie-filled, occult-themed title inspired by the work of horror master H.P Lovecraft; the original Alone in the Dark video game was developed by Infogrames in 1992 and spawned several sequels. In the new version, players will take on the role of private detective Edward Carnby as he tries to unravel a world-changing secret behind New York’s Central Park—and survive the story’s single horrifying night. The title has bee percolating for a while under the tentative names Alone in the Dark 5 and Alone in the Dark: Near Death Investigation, and was originally announced at the Tokyo Game show in 2005. The new edition of the game is being developed by Eden Games for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows platforms.
Bandai’s ‘Freedom’ First U.S. Twin Disc
The first triple-layer HD DVD/DVD Twin disc is slated to hit the North American market on June 26…and its not a blockbuster title from a major Hollywood studio. Bandai Visual has announced that its popular anime title Freedom will hit North American and Japanese retailers on June 26 (PDF) making it the first HD DVD/DVD Twin disc to reach consumers. Although a few titles have been released with HD DVD data on one side and standard DVD on the other, the Twin disc format offer three layers on the same side of the disc, and any of those layers can hold either HD DVD or standard DVD content.
EA Ships Black & White 2 Expansion Pack
Electronic Arts and Lionhead Studios yesterday said they’d were making available for purchase an expansion pack to the popular computer game Black & White 2. Black & White 2: Battle of the Gods should be in stores this week for $19.99, as well as being available for download from EA.
In Black & White 2: Battle of the Gods, said EA, players “return to Eden†to find the “Aztecs have raised their own evil deity, which must be confronted head-on for control of the landâ€. Features of the expansion pack include a new creature, two new lands, four new miracles and a new enemy unit AI system.
