Reports also differ on Wal-Mart’s plans to introduce the device: some have it pushing to offer iPhones by December 15 to catch the Christmas rush; others have the retailer waiting until December 28.

Sony Discontinues 20 GB PlayStation 3

Less than five months after introducing its PlayStation 3 video gaming console, Sony Computer Entertainment has officially discontinued the less expensive 20 GB version of the system in North America, leaving only the $599 60 GB edition available.

“At launch, we offered two separate models of PlayStation 3 to meet the diverse needs and interests of our PlayStation fan base,” said Sony America’s Dave Karraker in a statement. “Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of ninety percent in favor of the 60 GB SKU, so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly. Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60 GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20 GB model here in North America.”

Sony’s 20 GB PS3 Getting Hard to Find

Sony

When Sony launched the PlayStation 3 gaming console in the United States in November, the company went to market with two editions: one with a 20 GB hard drive and a $499 price tag, and another with a 60 GB hard drive, wireless capabilities, and a $599 price. Although Sony says it hasn’t discontinued the 20 GB edition, the company says users and retailers have always preferred the 60 GB edition—so much so that Sony only offered the 60 GB edition in Europe when the console launched there last month.

Sony Planning 80 GB PlayStation 3?

Sony Planning 80 GB PlayStation 3?Just a day after Microsoft officially announced its Xbox 360 Elite with a 120 GB hard drive and HDMI output, a required FCC filing hasrevealed that Sony is planning a new version of its PlayStation 3 gaming console with an 80 GB drive.

Currently, the PlayStation 3 is available in two configurations: a $499 edition with a 20 GB hard drive and wired controllers, and a $599 edition with a 60 GB hard drive and Bluetooth wireless capability. Although there is no official word from Sony on its plans for the 80 GB edition, the company has previously stated that retailers strongly prefer the 60 GB edition of the console—leading to low availability of the 20 GB edition, and prompting some potential customers balking at the console’s high price tags to wonder if Sony is trying to upsell as many buyers as possible. If Sony were to replace an offering in the existing PlayStation lineup, it seems logical to assume it would drop the 20 GB edition and add the 80 GB edition at the top of the line; otherwise, Sony might offer the 80 GB edition as a third, top-of-the-line configuration. No availability dates or pricing information is available for the 80 GB edition of the PlayStation 3.
