Homeland Security Uses MySpace

The application was already in hand, but the Department of Homeland Security asked MySpace to put it on a fast track. That way they could use MySpace to issue federal emergency warnings, which they were able to do for Hurricane Gustav, and also help track people who go missing in natural disasters.

Speaking to Agence France-Presse, MySpace chief security officer Hemanshu Nigam said:

"What you are seeing us doing with DHS and FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) is the beginning of bigger things to come in the future. Tragedy often inspires people to do great things and this has happened here."

Ubisoft Announces Emergency Heroes for Wii

Game publisher Ubisoft has announced it will ship Emergency Heroes for the Nintendo Wii game console this May. Emergency Heroes is an open-world rescue driving game aimed at younger gamers: players will be able to take 16 different emergency vehicles out into the city of San Alto to keep citizens safe.

Players will be able to drive a police officers, firefighters, and EMT vehicles specifically designed for high-speed, high-risk missions, and the entire city of San Alto will be available for players to explore and rescue citizens from dangerous situations. The game will feature single-player mission as well as a two-player co-op challenge where players can combine forces or challenge each other on rescue missions. The game will also feature a Hero Mode, where players get faster access to power-ups and enhancements the faster they drive.

FCC Proposes 911 Service for VoIP

“After a few incidents where customers failed to reach emergency officials when they dialed 911, federal regulators are increasing pressure on companies to ensure those calls get routed and answeredproperly with location information.

The proposal would require companies like Vonage Holdings Corp. to route 911 calls directly to primary emergency lines within four months of the order being issued, the sources said, declining to be identified because the proposal is not a public record.

Martin has circulated the proposal so it could be voted at the agency’s open meeting on May 19, the sources said. He would have to win the votes of two of the other three FCC commissioners for approval or work out a compromise with them.
