BA To Allow Flight Texting

BA To Allow Flight Texting

British Airways is going to allow passengers to use mobile phones to text, e-mail and surf from later this year. But that usage is going to be very limited.

You’ll need to be flying between London and New York on one of the company’s all-new 32-seater, all-business-class flights, the Daily Telegraph reports, and those flights won’t be cheap.

“The service is aimed at people in the Square Mile,” said a spokesman for BA. “We believe the route and the new technology will offer an appealing package to business travelers.”

Emirates Allows In-Flight Mobile Calls

Emirates Allows In-Flight Mobile CallsEmirates, the airline based in Dubai, has become the first to allow the use of mobile phones for making calls and sending texts during flights.   So farit’s only been done on a flight between Dubai and Casablanca, on an Airbus A340 that had been fitted with special equipment to prevent the calls affecting electronic flight systems, but it willbe expanded to other planes and routes, the BBC reports. Later this year the company will be able to accommodate BlackBerrys and other smart phones.   The system will only be allowed once theplane reaches cruising altitude, and can be monitored and controlled by the cabin crew, who will prevent voice calls during night flights, when they might disturb other passengers. Nor will there bethe chirping of ringtones, as passengers will be asked to keep their phones on silent.   The airline, which flies to some 60 countries, has introduced the service because of passenger demand. The system, developed by Aeromobile, has the approval of the international air safety groups.   AeroMobile Chief Executive Bjorn-Taale Sandberg said,  "We have gone to considerable lengths to ensure that all safety and regulatory issues have been fully addressed."

RFID Luggage Airport Trial

Have you ever landed after a long flight and waited at the carousel for your baggage? And waited and waited, only to eventually find out your bag never arrived with you? With the number of lost bags it’s something most of us have experienced. But a new trial at London’s Heathrow airport might eventually make that a thing of the past.   The six-month trial with Emirates Airlines will tag each bad with radio frequency identification (RFID), the BBC reports. It means that luggage could be tracked all the way through the loading and unloading process, which should (in theory) reduce the amount of lost bags.   Those behind the scheme say that passengers offering a mobile number could receive a text message on landing telling them where their bags are. Of course, if you’re in London and your bag has somehow found its way onto a flight to Hong Kong, that’s little consolation, but at least you’ll know it’s having fun.   Emirates Vice President for UK and Ireland, Vic Sheppard, said,   "This trial enables us to embrace the latest technology for the benefit of our customers."   With a massive increase in lost luggage claims last year, it’s been more and more obvious that a new system was needed. Let’s hope this works.

“Cyber Jihad” Inciters Jailed

Three men have been jailed in Britain for inciting terrorist murder on the Internet.   Younis Tsouli, 23, Tariq Al-Daour, 21, and Wasemm Mughal were all found guilty at Woolwich Crown Court in London. Moroccan-born Tsouli, a computer expert who worked with Al-Queda, received 10 years. Al-Daour, a British citizen born in the Arab Emirates, was given six-and-a-half years, while Mughal, who has a degree in chemistry from Leicester University, received seven-and-a-half years.   This was the first British prosecution for such an incident.   All three had pleaded guilty to the charge of inciting another person or persons to commit an act of terrorism wholly or partly outside the U.K. which would, if committed in England or Wales, constitute murder. Additionally, they admitted to conspiring to defraud banks and credit card companies.   Tsouli was known as Irhabi007 online, and helped distribute Al-Queda videos on the Internet. He was arrested in 2005 after two terrorist suspects were arrested in Bosnia. Examination of their cell phone records led to the arrest of more than 30 people across Europe and North America.   As he passed sentence, judge Mr. Justice Openshaw said that the three men had tried to incite a “cyber jihad.” Referring to Tsouli, whom he said should be deported to Morocco after completing his sentence, the judge pronounced that “he came no closer to a bomb or a firearm than a computer keyboard.”
