Exploding iPods And iPhones?

Most recently it’s been a French teenager who was injured when his girlfriend’s iPhone exploded. But lately there’s also been a report from the UK of an exploding iPod Touch, while KIRO TV in Seattle found 15 people complaining of burns and fire-related iPod incidents.

According to Marie-Dominique Kolega, who spoke to AFP, her French son was hit by the iPhone, which made a hissing noise prior to exploding.

"My son was frightened but he did not lose an eye," she said, noting she’d contacted Apple.

Marine Corps Bans Troops From Social Networking Sites

Marine Corps Bans Troops From Social Networking Sites

Pretty much since they appeared just a few years ago, people have debated the merits of social networking sites. Just last weekend the head of the Catholic Church in England criticized them. But the Marines have gone one step further – they’ve been troops from using Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. But this is because of security concerns.

The order states:

"These internet sites in general are a proven haven for malicious actors and content, and are particularly high risk due to information exposure, user-generated content and targeting by adversaries. The very nature of social networking sites creates a larger attack and exploitation window."

Catholic Archbishop Slams Facebook

Catholic Archbishop Slams Facebook

According to Archbishop Vincent Nichols, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, the accoutrements of the digital life – social networking sites, texting, and e-mails, are undermining community life.

Talking to the Sunday Telegraph, he said that friendships were becoming more “transient,” with quantity valued over quality, and claimed that was a key factor in suicides among young people.

"Friendship is not a commodity," he said.

"Friendship is something that is hard work and enduring when it’s right."

He said that society was losing its interpersonal skills because, more and more, people were using media that were not real communities.

U.K. ISP Adopts Three Strikes Policy

U.K. ISP Adopts Three Strikes Policy

Hull, on the east coast of England, is a little different. It’s the only city in the country that doesn’t use British Telecom, instead having its own, unique telecoms system, and that includes its own ISP, Karoo.

However, Karoo has been somewhat ruthless with illegal file sharers, cutting them off without warning. Now it’s scaling back to adopt a three-strikes-and-you’re-out policy, although even that is more severe than other British ISPs. But as the only game in town, consumers in Hull can’t choose a different ISP.

eBay Sues Skype Founders

eBay Sues Skype Founders

You may well remember that Internet auction giant eBay bought VoIP leader Skype for $2.6 billion in 2005, making very rich men of Skype’s co-founders, Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis. Now, however, relations seem to have fractured, according to Bloomberg.

It would appear that one thing eBay didn’t purchase was Skype’s peer-to-peer sharing technology. As eBay prepares a Skype IPO for next year, Zennstrom and Friis have accused to company of breaching the licensing deal they made and are threatening to pull their technology – which would render the service useless, of course.

It’s A Boy, With Thanks To YouTube

It

It might be the first YouTube baby. Engineer Marc Stephens from Cornwall, England, delivered the baby boy his wife has been carrying after she went heavily into labor, and before an ambulance could arrive to take her to hospital.

According to the mother, Jo Stephens, the couple had planned a home birth for their fourth child, but not quite so dramatically.

"I woke up and realized I was having contractions every five minutes," she told the BBC.

"I woke Marc up and we phoned the midwife, but they were all so busy they couldn’t come round to our house and told us to call an ambulance. But before it arrived, it all started."

The Force Is With…The Force

The Force Is With...The Force

Using the Freedom of Information Act, Jane’s Police Review has obtained information showing that eight officers of Strathclyde Police in Scotland claim Jedi as their religion on diversity forms.

Additionally, two civilian staff claim to follow the Star Wars religion. That’s from a total of 8,200 police officers and 2,800 civilian staff. No other UK force had Jedi members.

Jane’s Police Review editor Chris Herbert told the BBC:

"The Force appears to be strong in Strathclyde Police with their Jedi police officers and staff.”

eBay Scammer Wins Two Years In The Slammer

eBay Scammer Wins Two Years In The Slammer

For a while, Jason Hart of Manchester, England, believed that crime could pay. He sold a number of items on eBay, including 20 Xboxes, mobile phones, and tickets to the Ryder Cup, concerts, and other events. All in all, he made £23,500 (about $36,000) between September 2006 and April 2007.

That’s a profitable venture. Very profitable, in fact, since he never sent the buyers any of the items he sold. When those buyers pursued him for the goods, he came up with a string of excuses, the BBC reports, the ultimate of which was calling the local paper, posing as his father, to say Jason Hart had died. Finally complaints by customers to the police prompted an investigation, and authorities worked with eBay.

Believe It Or Not, Texting Could Improve Language Skills

Believe It Or Not, Texting Could Improve Language Skills

Researchers from Coventry University in England have been studying a group of 88 children aged between 10 and 12 to study the impact of texting on their language skills.

Their study, published in the British Journal of Developmental Psychology, showed that ‘textisms’ could positively affect reading development.

"Children’s use of textisms is not only positively associated with word reading ability, but it may be contributing to reading development ," the study reads.

The textisms came in categories, including shortenings, contractions, acronyms, symbols and non-conventional spellings, which were then analyzed for language use next to more traditional schoolwork.

1911 UK Census Goes Online

1911 UK Census Goes Online

Normally it’s 100 years before a British census is available, to ensure none, or very few, of those mentioned in it are still alive. However, a 2006 ruling by the Information Commissioner has meant that the census information for England and Wales has become available from the National Archives sooner than the projected January 2012 release date.

Although searching the census – the first to have data written by the participants themselves – is free, viewing and copying images is on a pay-per-view basis. Not all data will be available yet; information deemed “personally sensitive,” meaning “details of infirmity or other health-related information, information about family relationships which would usually have been kept secret and information about very young children who were born in prison,” still won’t become available until 2012, and nor will data from Scotland.
