Esquire’s Augmented Reality Issue Hits Newstands

The December issue of Esquire Magazine is finally out and highlights new Augmented Reality technology. Special pages in this issue will feature what looks like a crossword puzzle barcode. Just install the software from Esquire’s website (available for either Mac or PC) and then once it’s activated you can hold the special issue up to the webcam to see a suedo-3D  interactive show/feature from Robert Downey Jr. etc.

The whole technology show is pretty cool and gives a possible insight into the future of the magazine biz. Augmented Reality is the concept of overlaying computerized information, digital pop-up windows and/or virtual reality (VR) displays over real-world scenes and imagery.

Esquire to Showoff 3D Augmented Reality Issue in December

esquire-augmented-reality-cover-robert-downey-1209-lgHold Esquire’s December issue in front of a webcam, and an on-screen image of the magazine pops to life, letters flying off the cover. Shift and tilt the magazine, and the animation on the screen moves accordingly.

Robert Downey Jr. emerges out of the on-screen page in 3-D, offering half-improvised shtick on Esquire’s latest high-tech experiment for keeping print magazines relevant amid the digital onslaught.

Esquire’s top editors are clearly enthused about the new technology, called “augmented reality.”

“I felt like a caveman seeing fire for the first time,” says David Curcurito, the magazine’s art director.

Esquire to Feature Flashing E-Ink Cover

Esquire magazine, a long-time staple publication devoted to…well, OK, we don’t know what, but it seems to involve glamor photos of female celebrities, pop culture, and alcohol—is making new play to capture eyeballs on magazine racks across America: 100,000 copies of the publication’s September 2008 issue will be distributed to newsstands with a flashing, battery-powered cover featuring E-Ink technology, the same stuff used to drive the Amazon Kindle and other devices. The cover will (somewhat belatedly) proclaim “The 21st Century Begins Now”…at least into the batteries run out after a few months.
