E.U. Mobile Costs To Fall?

The European Commission is taking steps to change the termination fees, which are the amounts mobile operators charge each other to use their networks. The plan is that by 2011 those figures will be harmonized across Europe, as opposed to the national fees currently enacted – currently 27 different ones. The belief is that this will result in lower call costs for consumers.

These termination fees are nine times higher for mobiles than for landlines, according to the BBC, ranging from two Euro cents a minute in Cyprus to 18 Euro cents a minute in Bulgaria. The estimate is that by bringing all these fees into line, calls could become 70% cheaper.

Unlocked iPhones: Cheapest in France

Recent hubbub over the availability of unlocked iPhones has centered on Germany, where complaints from Vodafone and Debitel forced Apple’s German partner T-Mobile to offer an unlocked version of the coveted handset for a whopping €999, or almost USD $1,500. Now Apple’s iPhone partner in France, Orange, has stolen all the thunder, offering an unlocked version of the Apple handheld for just €649, or about $960 U.S. dollars. The €649 price includes a €100 fee for unlocking the iPhone during its first six months of availability; after that, French law will require Orange to unlock the iPhone for free.

Skype Goes Pro in Europe

VoIP provider Skype has launched Skype Pro for European subscribers, combining popular features and zero-cost calling into a subscription package costing just €2 a month.

"The combination of Skype’s free features with Skype Pro is very compelling," said Stefan Oberg, VP & GM of Telecoms at Skype. "Along with zero per minute calling, Skype Pro includes free voicemail, a generous discount on SkypeIn numbers, attractively priced Skype devices, plus five euros of SkypeOut credit when you sign up for five months. Skype Pro is a simple and cost-effective way for people to keep in touch with one another the world over."

Sony Officially Drops PSX prices In Japan

“The company quietly dropped the price of the low-end PSX system, which incorporates a 160Gb hard drive, to 44,800 Yen (333 Euro), while the high-end system, boasting a 250Gb hard drive, will nowhave an RRP of 59,800 Yen (444 Euro).

These latest drops shave 15,000 Yen (111 Euro) off the low-end system’s price tag, and 20,000 Yen (149 Euro) off the high-end one – but when combined with some earlier price drops, which also happened without fanfare a few weeks ago, the cut is even more drastic.”

Key Publishers Scale Back Gamecube Support

Third party support for Nintendo’s GameCube continues to wane, with the console set to be bereft of a game based on the Euro 2004 football tournament while Lucasarts has confirmed that it has no more titles in the pipeline for the system.

Both Electronic Arts and Codemasters are working on multi-platform football games for Euro 2004 (EA has the official license, while Codies have the England team license), but neither company will be bringing its game to the Cube.
