Warner Bros. and Monolith Productions have announced that F.E.A.R. 2; Project Origin has shipped to North American retailers for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 game consoles. FEAR 2 is the followup to the 2006 game F.E.A.R., a combat-based first-person shooter with a supernatural horror twist.

FEAR 2 picks up on the story at a point just before the ending of the original game, and follows a special forces squad as the fictional city of Auburn is laid waste by Alma, a girl with immense supernatural powers and a serious point to pick with…well, pretty much anybody. Players must search through the city for Alma and ways to stop her—along the way using everything at their disposal to defend themselves from supernatural hordes and grotesque “remnants.”

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group has announced it is buying UK game studio TT Games for an undisclosed amount. Founded in 2005 from the merger of Traveller’s Tales and Giant Interactive Entertainment, TT Games was one of the largest remaining independent game studios, and is responsible for developing the Lego Star Wars games, Bionicle Heroes, and many other titles.

“TT Games is very successful and respected in the game development and publishing world,” said Warmer Bros. CEO and chairman Barry Meyer, in a statement. “They are a great fit for us and the right next step for Warner Bros. as we grow into a significant presence in the games space.”

Although they announced it in August, 2006, Sierra Entertainment has finally shipped the first title in its genre-combining F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon) franchise for the PlayStation 3, bringing the games rated-M mix of first-person shooter and horror to Sony’s top-of-the-line game console.

“The F.E.A.R. franchise has sold over 2 million copies since inception and now PlayStation 3 system users will be the latest to experience the true meaning of F.E.A.R.,” said Pascal Brochier, president, Global Retail for Vivendi Games. “We’re excited to bring this award winning, bone chilling title to the PlayStation 3 system console and expect an entire new base of gamers to become fans of F.E.A.R.”

Sony Consoles Getting Slew of New Titles

PlayStation fans will be able to get their hands on a lot more games in the coming months, promises Sony. The Foster City, Calif.-based company said today it will launch more than 100 titles for its PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable and PlayStation2 products. The beefed-up second-quarter of 2007 line-up will comprise industry leading franchises as well as new intellectual properties from both in-house and third parties, according to Sony Computer Entertainment America.

“We are excited by the content being developed by our partners, but are also looking forward to launching PlayStation-branded exclusive games created by our own worldwide studios this quarter and throughout the rest of 2007," said Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing at SCEA in a statement.

Sony Reveals PlayStation 3 Launch Details

As the much-anticipated North American launch of its PlayStation 3 gaming console nears, Sony Corporation has detailed the availability and pricing of key PS3 peripherals, the initial title line-up for the new console, and details of the PlayStation 3 online service.

Although pricing for PS3 consoles has been public knowledge for a while—$499 for a 20 GB unit and $599 for a 60 GB PS3 with Wi-Fi—Sony outlined pricing for key PlayStation 3 peripherals. An extra SIXAXIS wireless controller will go for $49.99, a HD remote control for managing movies and media will be priced at $24.99, and a memory card adapter for transferring game information from PlayStation 2 memory cards will go for $14.99.

F.E.A.R. Launches Fan Film Contest

Sierra Entertainment and GameTrailers have teamed up to launch a user-generated movie contest called “Show Us Your F.E.A.R.” via the official Web site for the upcoming action/horror game F.E.A.R.—First Encounter Assault Recon, due to ship in November 2006.

In the contest, users submit their own unique, short, scary, and creative videos which demonstrate what they feel to be the true meaning of the word fear. (We imagine for some, the films could be titled A Day Without Playstation.) On October 24, GameTrailers will announce five to ten finalists for the contest, and then let site users vote for their favorites. The winner will receive a $1,000 grand prize.

Sierra Entertainment announced today that its award-winning first-person shooter First Encounter Assault Recon—a.k.a. F.E.A.R.—will ship for Sony’s forthcoming PlayStation 3 console in November 2006. Developed by Monolith Productions along with Day 1 Studios, F.E.A.R. combines stylized first-person shooter mayhem and spine-tingling paranormal encounters and close-quarters action. Many screenshots from the coming PS3 edition follow.

F.E.A.R. is already available for PCs (rated M, natch); a version is also in development for Xbox 360 consoles.

F.E.A.R. Combat Details Announced

F.E.A.R. Combat is the new multiplayer element that is now available for a free download at www.joinfear.com . The new add-on includes updates, additional official maps, and new game modes in the download. Users will be able to play against the owners of the retail version of F.E.A.R. as well as those with the new software update.

New F.E.A.R. Combat features include:

  • 10 Multiplayer Game Modes
  • 19 Multiplayer Maps
  • 12 Different Weapons
  • Punkbuster support for anti-cheat support
  • The capability to download user generated content

Vivendi Games Offers Up E3 Roster

Vivendi Games, through their Blizzard Entertainment and Sierra Entertainment studios, today unveiled their E3 related line up of upcoming video game titles. Many of these titles have expected release dates of this fall and beyond.

Debuting from Blizzard Entertainment, said Vivendi, is a new World of Warcraft expansion pack for the highly popular MMORPG. Dubbed World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, this upcoming PC title brings forth rumors amongst a fragile peace that the Burning Legion’s war against Azeroth has been rekindled. More details on this, including details for the beta test, will be released later this year.

GameSpot Hands Out Best of 2005 Awards

Editors over at GameSpot, a leading gaming portal, today announced the results of their “Best and Worst of 2005” awards. Leading the best of category was Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 for the PlayStation 2.

“Resident Evil 4 is a stunning game that anyone old enough to appreciate it really ought to experience,” said Greg Kasavin, executive editor of GameSpot. “Even though the game shipped at the very beginning of the year, scarcely any other 2005 games even began to approach its level of quality and intensity. It’s incredible just to see the game in action, but even better when you play it for yourself.”
