The Curse Of Silence For Nokia Sets

The Curse Of Silence For Nokia Sets

They’re calling it the Curse of Silence, an exploit for the Nokia N60 that can prevent the handset from sending or receiving text messages, and it’s been made public by F-Secure. Although the texting capabilities of the handset can be halted, all the phone’s other functions remain intact. The exploit was made public on Monday at the Chaos Communication Congress, according to InformationWeek.

Those wanting to initiate an attack can format a mail to be sent as an SMS message, then set the Protocol Identifier on the message to "Internet Electronic Mail." Some S60 devices won’t be able to receive more SMS or MMS messages if the initial message has more than 32 characters, and it’s possible for a single message to damage the targeted device, according to F-Secure.

F-Secure: Malware Doubled in 2007

F-Secure: Malware Doubled in 2007

It’s an imprecise metric, but it shines an interesting light on our times. At the beginning of 2007, computer security firm F-Secure was tracking about 250,000 malware signatures; now, as the end of 2007 approaches, F-Secure estimates it will be tracking about 500,000 malware signatures when the year is done.

The surprising increase in the sheer number of malware programs in the wild has to do with variants: malware creators are now generating variants on their viruses, worms, and trojans in bulk in an effort to stave off the efforts of antivirus software (such as that produced by F-Secure, and also competitors like Symantec and McAfee). F-Secure believes actual innovation in the malware "industry" is in decline, with creators focussing on a quantity-over-quality approach to tricking Internet users, taking over their systems, or stealing personal information.

Fast Worm Infects Thousands Of PCs

Data security firm F-Secure says the worm, which surfaced at the weekend and is known as “Sasser,” automatically spreads via the Internet to computers using the Microsoft Windows operating system, especially Windows 2000 and XP.

“We’ll be in the dark for quite a while as to how many computers have been affected,” said Mikko Hypponen, Anti-Virus Research Director at F-Secure.
