Kodak Takes the Kodachrome Away

Kodak Takes the Kodachrome Away

Citing declining sales due to the vast popularity of digital photography, Kodak announced today that it is officially retiring its Kodachrome film, after a 74 year run. Kodachrome was the world’s first commercially successful color film, and first hit the market in 1935, and was a standby of both professional and film photographers for decades. At one point the trademarked term faced the same danger as Kleenex, Xerox, and Google: being used generically to indicate any color film, not just a particular brand within Kodak.

YouTube to Premiere Film "Home" Same Day as Theaters

YouTube to Premiere Film "Home" Same Day as Theaters

YouTube might be the kind of online video, but it’s not exactly known as a bastion of quality online video: instead, people are likely to find videos of amateur singers or camcordered grade school graduation ceremonies than professionally-produced offerings. But in a move to prove it can compete with the big boys—and no doubt attract major audiences and advertising dollars—YouTube will be premiering the environmentally-themed film Home tomorrow at the same time the film debuts in theaters.

Second Life Going to the Big Screen?

Second Life Going to the Big Screen?

The entertainment publication Variety reports that Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski may be working to bring the Second Life virtual world to the big screen…although perhaps not in a way that would please Linden Labs. According to the paper, Verbinski and Universal have acquired the rights to a 2007 Wall Street Journal article detailing the case of a 53 year-old, married man who spent as much as 20 hours a day in Second Life, where he played the role of a buffed-out entrepreneur…with his own virtual relationship.

Windows 7: Kicking Mac OS Butt?

There is a lot of bad blood this year between Microsoft and Apple. Apple has aggressively launched a negative political-style marketing campaign against the PC giant. While this advertising blitz – you know, the “I’m a PC/I’m a Mac” shtick – has been well executed and very entertaining, it’s also had an uneXPected side-effect as well. In short, it’s lit a huge fire under the thousand or so people developing Microsoft’s next operating system, Windows 7, and for the first time in over a decade, they’re properly focused on slapping Apple upside the head.

Universal Planning BioShock Movie

Universal Studios has started the wheels rolling on creating a feature film based on the hit first-person shooter video game BioShock, with Pirates of the Caribbean’s Gore Verbinksi assigned to both direct and produce. Aviator writer John Logan is attached to write the first draft of the screenplay.

According to Variety, the deal is structured in such a way that BioShock won’t get stuck in a stagnant turnaround cycle (like Microsoft’s plans for a motion picture based on the Halo franchise); BioShock publisher Take-Two Interactive—which also handles the Grand Theft Auto franchise will receive a multi-million dollar advance against a percentage of gross revenue on the film.

Indonesia Blocks YouTube

Indonesia Blocks YouTubeDutch lawmaker Geert Wilders is a controversial figure. He recently released a short film, Fitna (the name means strife or conflict), in which he accuses the Koran of inciting Islamic violence. Inother words, not the most conciliatory attitude.   The film is available on YouTube, and that’s led at least four Indonesian ISPs to block access tothe video sharing site, according to the country’s information ministry.   The film has been banned by the country, although President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has urged that citizens inthe mostly Muslim country demonstrate peacefully against it.   As well as blocking YouTube, at least one of the ISPs, Telekom, has been more pro-active, blocking MySpace as well as actively seeking out other sites where the film has been posted.   The Dutch government has taken great pains to distance itself fromWilders’s film and viewpoint.

Network Solutions Suspends Site

The film has been garnering publicity in Europe for months, not simply for what it is, but also who made it. Fitna – an Arabic word generally used to describe religious turmoil – was made by Dutch politician Geert Wilders, a controversial figure who was elected to the parliament there on an anti-immigration platform, heading up a party with nine seats. In Dutch newspaper De Volksrant, he described Fitna:   "The film is not so much about Muslims as about the Koran and Islam. The Islamic ideology has as its utmost goal the destruction of what is most dear to us, our freedom. Fitna is the last warning for the West. The fight for freedom has only just begun."   Network Solutions was hosting the film’s site, although it contained to footage from the 15-minute movie. On Sunday the company said it has received a number of complaints and decided to suspend service while it investigated whether the sire violated its terms of service.   The film has already been criticized in several Islamic countries. There’s a suit pending in Dutch court aimed at preventing him releasing Fitna on March 28 – but he can’t be prevented from releasing it before then. Dutch TV stations have already refused to air the film.

EA’s Dead Space Headed to Film

Breaking the usual cycle of video games finding critical success then attracting movie deals, Electronic Arts’ yet-to-be-released sci-fi horror game Dead Space is already destined for film. EA and Starz Media announced on Friday that they will collaborate on an animated prequel based on the game.

The movie will pick up where the comic book series leaves off, but before the game plot picks up, filling the gap between the two. It will focus on the futuristic mining spaceship, the USG Ishimura, which is plagued by an alien presence after pulling a mysterious artifact from a mining site.
