SanDisk Unveils 2GB SD/USB Card Hybrid

SanDisk over the weekend announced a larger storage size capacity for their SD memory card which combines USB connectivity and flash memory storage. The new 2GB SanDisk Ultra II SD Plus card is priced at $134.99 and should be available come June.

The SanDisk Ultra II SD Plus card family, said SanDisk, consists of a series of flash memory cards (512MB, 1GB, new 2GB) which look and function like a typical SD card but can be folded in half to reveal a USB 2.0 connector plug which be plugged into any USB port. This effectively eliminates the need for a separate card reader. Write speeds of this line reportedly get 9MB per second, while read speeds are at 10MB per second. It is targeted towards digital photographers.

SanDisk has introduced the SanDisk Ultra II SD PLUS, an innovative SD flash memory card with built-in USB connectivity. The new card, which works seamlessly in any SD card slot, also can be used as a high-speed USB 2.0 flash drive. The announcement was made at the annual Photo Marketing Association (PMA) Show at the Orange County Convention Center where SanDisk is demonstrating products in Booth 2408.

The new dual-functionality device has been added to the SanDisk Ultra II product line, a family of high-performance flash memory cards with write speeds of 9 megabytes (MB) per second and read speeds of 10MB/sec.

SanDisk Creates Memoy Cards For Video Games

SanDisk’s entry into the video game market comes as companies that manufacture portable video game consoles develop devices that include slots for standard flash memory cards. The company has adopted unique game packaging and redesigned the “look and feel” of the cards to spur sales among younger consumers.

Christina Day, SanDisk product marketing manager, said, “The new generation portable game consoles now incorporate digital audio players, video players and photo viewers. Our flash memory cards are a natural fit with these products as game users need incremental storage for their music, video and photos. Consumers also can use the cards to store their game content such as trailers and demos, game levels and to download and store any data from the included WiFi connectivity of the PlayStation Portable PSP.”

Lexar Unveils New USB Card Form Factor

The new USB card form factor is based on the USB Type A connector as outlined in the Universal Serial Bus Specification. At half the width and a little more than twice the height, it isvolumetrically similar to an SD card. The rugged, sturdy metal housing is intended to make the USB card suitable for use in a range of environments.

Lexar’s USB FlashCard will be the first product based on the new form factor. The USB FlashCard will offer universal plug and play connectivity with all modern operating systems leveraging the ubiquity of the USB interface. Lexar plans to introduce Full-Speed USB versions in 16MB, 32MB and 64MB capacities as well as Hi-Speed USB versions in 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB and 1GB capacities with a high performance 60MB/s interface speed in 2005.

SanDisk Debuts New Portable Media Players

The new Digital Audio Players combine crystal-clear sound with a sleek design and sport a three-button/one-joystick design and easy-to-navigate user interface. They feature MP3, Windows Media(R) file and Windows Media-based DRM file playback, FM radio and voice recording and can double as a USB data storage device. Because the players have the ability to play Windows Media-based DRM files, they can be used with any of the popular music purchase sites, such as Musicmatch(R) music store.

“The new Digital Audio Player line offers all of the key features you need in a portable music player at a highly affordable price,” said Eric Bone, director of retail product marketing at SanDisk. “It uses reliable flash memory which offers greater durability and ruggedness, smaller size, no noise of a rotating drive, and the ability to play hundreds of songs on a single AAA battery. In addition, it is designed to work seamlessly with a wide range of music sites that offer popular music formats such as MP3 and Windows Media as well as Windows Media-based DRM files from music subscription sites. This will make an ideal gift for the holidays.”

SanDisk Expands Low-Cost Storage Retailers

SanDisk Corporation today announced that it has passed the 10,000-store threshold in its rapidly expanding efforts to offer inexpensive Shoot & Store flash memory cards to consumers in places where they shop frequently. Rite Aid and Kmart are among the latest retailers to begin selling the line, joining hundreds of other drug and grocery storefronts.

Rite Aid Category Manager Steve Lund said that sales of Shoot & Store cards have been “very encouraging. They are part of our strategy to build consumer awareness of Rite Aid as a one-stop center for digital cameras, flash memory cards and print processing.” At Kmart, the line expands the retailer’s ongoing commitment to digital photography products. Also adding the cards are several major supermarket chains.

SanDIsk Announces 6-in-1 PC Card Adapter

SanDisk Corporation Monday introduced the world’s first 6-in-1 PC Card Adapter, giving notebook computer users the largest number of card formats for moving files to and from flash memory devicessuch as digital cameras, PDAs, MP3 players and mobile phones. The announcement was made at the Digital Experience media conference in New York.

The new adapter offers easy, plug-and-play compatibility with no software needed, and works with six different memory card formats: SD, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD-Picture Card, and SmartMedia. To read a card, users simply insert it into the adapter, and then slide the adapter into any computer with a PC Card slot. In this mode, the adapter works like a removable hard drive.

Kenwood Introduces NHT-815DV Audio System

In order to increase PC and video game compatibility with the home theater, it has an audio/video receiver with an ethernet connection, PCMCIA card slot and special features for video games.

The NHT-815DV includes front-panel game system inputs, Dual-Source/Single-Zone audio, and Dolby® Headphone that simulates 5.1 channel surround sound in standard stereo headphones. A separate,single-disc progressive scan DVD player with MP3/WMA audio, DVD video, and JPEG photo CD playback is also included. The ethernet connection allows the NHT-815DV to stream audio and video media filesin real time from a PC via a wired network.

Kenwood Announces Networked Home Theater

Kenwood has recently introduced its first 6.1-channel home theater system featuring an audio/video receiver equipped with an Ethernet connection, PCMCIA card slot, and special features for video gamers.

The new NHT-815DV includes front-panel game system inputs, Dual-Source/Single-Zone audio, and Dolby Headphone for simulating 5.1 channel surround sound in standard stereo headphones. A separate, single-disc progressive scan DVD player with MP3/WMA audio, DVD video, and JPEG photo CD playback is also included.
