SanDisk Unveils 2GB SD/USB Card Hybrid

SanDisk over the weekend announced a larger storage size capacity for their SD memory card which combines USB connectivity and flash memory storage. The new 2GB SanDisk Ultra II SD Plus card is priced at $134.99 and should be available come June.

The SanDisk Ultra II SD Plus card family, said SanDisk, consists of a series of flash memory cards (512MB, 1GB, new 2GB) which look and function like a typical SD card but can be folded in half to reveal a USB 2.0 connector plug which be plugged into any USB port. This effectively eliminates the need for a separate card reader. Write speeds of this line reportedly get 9MB per second, while read speeds are at 10MB per second. It is targeted towards digital photographers.

Dov Moran, CEO of M-Systems, the company which has been contracted by Microsoft to provide flash memory storage for Xbox 2, has told an Israeli newspaper that the next-generation console will not have a hard disc drive.

This is the first time that anyone connected with the development of the system has gone on record about the issue of the hard drive, although sources at Microsoft and key developers have told us that it was unlikely that a hard drive would be included in the console.

Apple Unlikely To Release Cheaper iPods

Don’t count on seeing dramatically smaller or cheaper iPod music players in the new year, despite Internet rumors that Apple Computer will announce them next week in San Francisco.

For Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs to introduce such a product during his speech Tuesday at Macworld Conference & Expo, Apple would have to either unveil a breakthrough hard-drive technology, begin selling iPods based on the same flash-memory storage cards that many digital cameras use, or adopt a new small drive made by Cornice, a Longmont, Colo., start-up.
