Spain-baed Fon has announced that its Fonera 2.0n Wi-Fi Router is now available in the U.S. market, offering improved performance along with a built-in USB hub and and reduced power requirements. Fon—which has attracted investments from the likes of Google, eBay, and British Telecom—is a little different from your average Wi-Fi router manufacturer: the idea is that folks who run a Fon Wi-Fi router also serve as a hotspot in Fon’s broader network of Wi-Fi hotspot, which may also be used by other Fon users (dubbed “foneros”); in exchange, Fon owners also get access to more than 350,000 Fon hotspots around the world, as well as partner hotspots. Users control the level of access they provide to others, and non-sharing foneros can buy passes to the Fon network.

BT Inks Deal with Fon Wi-Fi Network
Although the deal has been expected since early 2007, UK telecom operator BT has inked a deal that gives its broadband subscribers have the option of sharing a portion of their broadband connections via the Fon Wi-Fi “people’s network,” in exchange for Wi-Fi access worldwide at other hotspots operated by “Foneros.”
As part of the deal, BT subscribers will also have free access to BT’s OpenZone and twelve “Wireless Cities.”
Under the deal, BT broadband subscribers who join the Fon network will securely share a portion of their broadband connectivity via Wi-Fi with others who happen to be nearby; in exchange, they’ll be able to tap into Wi-Fi access at more than 190,000 Fon Wi-Fi hotspots around the world.
Boingo Offers Roaming on Fon Wi-Fi Network
Wireless hotspot operator Boingo has announced a deal with the Madrid-based wireless network Fon to enable Boingo users to roam on Fon’s Wi-Fi network. Boingo already combined access to Wi-Fi hotspots operated by over 150 operators, many of which provide wireless Internet access at businesses, restaurants, airports, and other locations. The Fon network, which is built out by "foneros" who share unused broadband access in exchange for being able to connect to the Internet via hotspots operated by other foneros, conversely tends to have hotspots where Boingo-affiliated operators can be stretched thin, like residential areas.
