Rewind History with All-Pro Football 2K8

Rewind History with All-Pro Football 2K8

When Electronic Arts cut a deal with the National Football League in 2004 giving them exclusive rights to the league’s branding in their titles,  the Madden series put a major damper on other football franchises. How would they sell without the teams fans were rabidly attached to? Game publisher 2K Sports has their own answer: sell the players, not the teams.

2K Sports announced details about the upcoming All-Pro Football 2K8 on Thursday, which revealed that the game’s roster will consist of football heroes past and present. Each one will have signature abilities, and an attribute system will be included for further customization.

Football Manager Live Breaks MMORPG Mold

Up until now, Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) have mostly concerned themselves with creating realms where players can battle it out with enchanted weapons, collect spells, and slay dragons. Sega Europe turned that stereotype on its head on Friday, when it announced the development of Football Manager Live, a soccer (for those of us in the States) management MMORPG.

The game will be an overhaul of the already-popular Football Manager 2007, an online fantasy sports simulation. Football Manager Live will allow fans to create their own soccer clubs and control every aspect of their development, from choosing club colors to player auctions and team finances. In traditional MMORPG style, matches will take place 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

EA Announces Arena Football Cover Player

Video game company Electronic Arts announced today that they had selected a cover player for their forthcoming Arena Football game, which is set to debut Feb. 7, 2006. The game will be available for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox video game systems.

EA said that John Dutton, quarterback for the 2005 Arena Football League champion Colorado Crush, was selected to grace the cover. Dutton led the Colorado Crush to its first-ever Arena Football League championship in just their third year in the league, throwing for 347 yards and three touchdowns. Dutton, a seven year Arena Football League veteran, previously led the San Jose SaberCats to an ArenaBowl title in 2002 where he was named MVP of ArenaBowl XVI.

Sirius Going to Harvard

Get ready for Ivy League sports over the satellite radio waves. Sirius today said they’d inked a deal with the big eight – Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Yale – to broadcast a game of the week plus a select number of other events.

Under the terms of the multi-year agreement, Sirius said, the game of the week to be broadcast will draw from the sports of football and men’s basketball. Men’s hockey and other games across the Ivy League sports scene, meanwhile, will fall into the select number of broadcasts category.

Football Star Lawrence Taylor Gets to Blitz

Video game football fans looking for a little something beyond the typical NFL endorsed package might be interested to take note of Midway Games’ upcoming unlicensed title called Blitz: The League. Slated for an October release, the video game company today said they’d drafted former football great Lawrence Taylor to add his greatness to the upcoming PS2 and Xbox console title.

Lawrence Taylor, according to a Midway press release, will provide his image for Blitz: The League’s game cover. In addition, Taylor will be featured as the voice and personality of one of the game’s key characters, New York Nightmare star linebacker Quentin Sands.

NBA Rejects EA Exclusivity Proposal

“After EA secured an unprecedented, and hugely expensive five-year exclusivity partnership with the National Football League (NFL) and its players association last week – effectively eliminating direct competition in the American football genre – IGN suggests that the NBA has rejected an initial offer from EA gunning for a similar arrangement, arguing that EA’s relative lack of domination in the basketball genre may have been a significant factor.”

We are happy to see the NBA deny exclusivity with EA. While we think Electronic Arts makes some fantastic games, do we really want them to be the only sports game provider?

Sony Halts Sports Game Updates For 2004

Sony Computer Entertainment of America said its 989 Sports label would not release the professional or collegiate versions of its football and basketball games for the 2004-2005 season.

The company’s baseball, soccer and Olympics titles are unaffected, as is its hockey franchise, all of which have either been released or remain on track for release this year. A spokesman said the company intends to bring the football and basketball games back in 2005, taking the interim time to work on game development and make the titles more competitive.
