Toshiba Rolls Out WiMax Satellite Notebook

Toshiba Rolls Out WiMax Satellite Notebook

Just yesterday Acer took the wraps off two WiMax equipped notebooks available for sale in Baltimore, the first city lite up on Sprint’s planned nationwide Xohm WiMax network. Now Toshiba is getting in on the act, rolling out a WiMax-equiped version of its Satellite U405 notebook with a 13.3-inch display and combined WiMax/Wi-Fi networking.

The Satellite U405-ST550W features an intel Core 2 Duo processor, an integrated Webcam with face recognition, a 320 GB hard drive, 4 GB of RAM, USB 2.0, and (interestingly) an eSATA port.

DirecTV Inks Powerline Internet Deal

DirecTV Inks Powerline Internet Deal

Satellite television operator DirecTV has announced it has reached an agreement to offer subscribers high-speed Internet connectivity and voice telephone services using technology from the Current Group. And those Internet services will reach subscribers over electrical power lines, rather than telephone, DSL, fiber, wireless, or (ack!) cable technologies.

The initial service rollout is slated to begin in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and will expand out to cover more than 1.8 million homes and businesses “over the next several years.” As Current Group builds out its network of IP-over-powerline services, DirecTV will be able to offer broadband services over powerlines in additional areas.

Microsoft’s Live Search Gets 3D City Models

Microsoft has taken the wraps of Virtual Earth 3D, an update to its online mapping service which now offers three-dimensional views and models of the real world. Further, Microsoft has integrated mapping options into its Live Search.

“The release of Virtual Earth 3D is a significant step toward creating a truly new dimension in search not only in the look and feel of the experience but in the way consumers and advertisers can be involved,” said Steve Berkowitz, senior VP of Microsoft’s Online Services Group. “Local search is one of the fastest-growing categories online today, and adding features like 3-D will only help move the category further ahead and help Windows Live attract more customers and advertisers.”

Verizon Rolling Out Fiber-To-The-Premises

From the company’s press release:

Verizon customers in Keller, Texas, soon will be the first to receive groundbreaking high-speed Internet services over Verizon’s fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network. The company is raising the bar on consumer broadband today by introducing data speeds of up to 30 megabits-per-second (Mbps) in Keller later this summer and in other markets later this year. Prices start at $34.95 per month.

The company also announced additional fiber deployments that are under way in California and Florida.

Qualcomm Tests 3G In-Flight

From the press release:

Through the use of an in-cabin third-generation (3G) “picocell” network, passengers on the test flight were able to place and receive calls as if they were on the ground.

The proof-of-concept demonstration flight originated out of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. During the approximate two-hour flight, passengers were able to place and receive phone calls and text messages on their mobile phones. Passengers included members of the media and government representatives.

A small in-cabin CDMA cellular base station on the plane, that uses standard cellular communications, was connected to the worldwide terrestrial phone network by an air-to-ground Globalstar satellite link.

Qualcomm Tests In-Flight CDMA Calling

Qualcomm Incorporated pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, and American Airlines, the world’s largest carrier, today successfully demonstrated in-cabin voice communications using commercially available CDMA mobile phones on a commercial American Airlines aircraft. Through the use of an in-cabin third-generation (3G) “picocell” network, passengers on the test flight were able to place and receive calls as if they were on the ground.
