U.S. and EU officials are promising to crack down on the manufacturing, distribution, and sales of counterfeit computer components after seizing more than 360,000 fake items worth more than $1.3 billion during a two-week period in a joint operation run at the end of 2007. Seized materials bore the trademarks of major manufacturers including Cisco, Intel, and Philips. Officials would not say whether they knew importers were knowingly bringing counterfeit goods into their markets, or whether the problem was limited to only a few factories. However, both U.S. and EU officials agree counterfeiters have become more sophisticated, offering products covering a wide range of industries from computer and telecommunications to aeronautics and cars.

Google Launches Literacy Project
At the Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany, Internet titan Google announced The Literacy Project, designed to help teachers, learning organizations, and others search for (and share) literacy information. The service offers searches for digitized books, academic articles, and literacy-oriented information published in blogs, videos, and discussion groups. The service also ties in with Google Maps to enable users to location literacy organiations around the world. The service was developed in conjunction with the Frankfurt Book Fair Literacy Campaign (Litcam) and Unesco’s Institute for Lifelong Learning.
Siemens Shows Working Paper-Thin Displays
German electronics giant Siemens has exhibited paper-thin flexible display screens at the Plastics Electronics trade show in Frankfurt. Although displays still need to be refined and costs would make them impractical for consumer products today, Siemens anticipates they’ll be available on the market by 2007.
